Adaptability and stability of peach yield of cultivar BRS Libra grafted on different rootstocks in the subtropics

Abstract: The objective was to evaluate the adaptability and yield stability of different peach rootstock genotypes in subtropical climate in an experiment in Chapecó, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Twenty-one rootstocks under the scion cultivar 'BRS Libra' and one genotype from self-rooted nursery trees were evaluated. The 22 genotypes were evaluated as fruit set and fruit yield in the growing seasons 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18. Adaptability and stability were measured by the GGE biplot method. In the four years of… Show more

“…These hybrids had a significantly higher initial fruit set than the Summerset cultivar, which had the lowest initial fruit set (57.4%). In addition to the genotype, the fruit set in peach also varies depending on the environmental conditions at the flowering time (Santana et al 2020).…”

“…The viability of peach growing in regions with mild winters is a result of the use of cultivars with low chill requirements (Santana et al 2020). Therefore, the breeding of peach for those regions is aimed mainly at the development of cultivars with a chill requirement compatible with the climate of those locations (Corrêa et al 2019, Silva et al 2020b).…”

“…Peaches and nectarines are the most worldwide known stone fruits and are highly appreciated by consumers (Drogoudi and Tsipouridis, 2007;Reig et al, 2016;Seker et al, 2017;Santana et al, 2020). The expansion of peach cultivation and nursery production is mainly based on the introduction to the market of a high number of cultivars each year, satisfying every consumer's needs and expectations.…”

“…the rootstock and the scion cultivar (Zarrouk et al, 2005;Zarrouk et al, 2006;Ben Yahmed et al, 2020;Shahkoomahally et al, 2021). The right choice of the rootstock and scion cultivar combination is probably the most important factor of the peach cultivation success (Reig et al, 2016;Özdemir et al, 2019;Santana et al, 2020;Shahkoomahally et al, 2020). Rootstocks are selected based on some good properties, such as the aforementioned peach replant tolerance, resistance to soil pathogens and lime-induced chlorosis, to root-knot nematodes, to root asphyxia etc.…”
