BackgroundSleep bruxism (SB) occurring during No‐REM (nREM) sleep and increase in microarousals per hour have been described in adults, but not in children.ObjectiveTo assess the correlation between sleep architecture and masseter muscle activity related to sleep bruxism (SB/MMA) in children.Materials and methodsForty‐three children aged 7–12 years (mean age: 9.4 ± 1.3) with confirmed SB underwent a two‐night polysomnographic (PSG) study in a sleep laboratory, for accommodation (first night) and data collection (second night). Data on sleep architecture (total sleep duration (TSD), sleep efficiency (SE), sleep onset latency (SOL), REM and nREM sleep duration and proportion and microarousals/hour during REM and nREM sleep) and episodes/hour of SB/MMA were recorded. Single and multiple‐variable linear regression analyses were performed to assess the correlation between data on sleep architecture (predictors) and SB/MMA (dependent variable).ResultsShorter TSD, REM and nREM stage 1 sleep duration, longer SOL and more microarousals/hour during REM and nREM sleep were found to be positive predictors of SB/MMA in children in the multiple‐variable regression analysis (R2 = 0.511).ConclusionWithin the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that SB/MMA is correlated with altered sleep architecture in children (shorter total sleep duration (TSD), shorter nREM and REM sleep and higher microarousals during REM and nREM sleep). Nevertheless, the clinical significance of these findings need to be demonstrated in future studies.

Objective: Quality of life (QoL) assessments are increasingly important for evaluating the well-being of children with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). This study’s objective is to culturally adapt and validate the Turkish version of the OSA-18 questionnaire, a commonly used tool for assessing QoL in children with OSAS. Methods: The OSA-18 questionnaire was translated and culturally adapted for use in the Turkish-speaking population. The study was conducted with 180 participants, 100 boys and 80 girls, with a mean age of 6.16±2.14 years. The participants were divided into two groups. The patient group comprised individuals with symptoms of OSAS based on clinical evaluation, including anamnesis, physical examination, and video recording of apnea and snoring. The patient group underwent adenotonsillectomy and their caregivers completed the Turkish version of the OSA-18 scale postoperatively. The control group comprised 90 children who were similar to the patient group in terms of gender and age. These children had no major complaints such as snoring, apnea, fatigue during the day, irritability, or distraction. In the physical examination of this group, no major tonsillar or adenoid hypertrophy, which causes significant stenosis in the upper airway, was observed. Internal consistency, reliability, validity, responsiveness, and factor analysis were assessed. Results: The Turkish version of the OSA-18 questionnaire demonstrated excellent reliability, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.929. The test-retest results were not statistically different. Validity was confirmed through a positive correlation between the OSA-18 score and external parameters, such as the Mallampati score, and tonsil and adenoid size. We found a statistically significant reduction in OSA-18 scores postoperatively, signifying a robust responsiveness to the intervention. Conclusion: Our study confirms the suitability of the Turkish OSA-18 questionnaire for assessing the QoL in children with OSAS. This quick and easy-to-use tool will be valuable for future research on Turkish-speaking children with OSAS, aiding in the evaluation of pediatric OSAS and QoL.

Objectives Improvements in sleep‐related quality of life (QOL) and behavioral problems have been observed in children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) during a short‐term follow‐up after adenotonsillectomy. Whether this trend continues beyond the short term remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the long‐term effects of surgery in children with OSA. Methods The study participants comprised 20 children with OSA who underwent adenotonsillectomy. We used the scores from the Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scale (ADHD‐RS) and total scores from the Korean OSA‐18 Survey (KOSA‐18) before and after adenotonsillectomy to compare and analyze behavioral problems and OSA‐specific health‐related QOL, respectively, during a long‐term follow‐up. Respiratory disturbance parameters from standard polysomnography and subjective symptom scores for snoring and apnea were also investigated. Results The mean patient age was 6.6 ± 3.4 years (range, 3–13), and the male‐to‐female ratio was 15:5. The mean follow‐up period was 54.5 months (range, 27–98). The total scores for both ADHD‐RS (from 17.6 to 10.5; P = 0.006) and KOSA‐18 (from 74.3 to 40.7; P = 0.001) decreased significantly from before to after surgery. Significant decreases were also observed in the subjective symptom scores for snoring (from 5.4 to 2.4; P = 0.000) and apnea (from 3.3 to 0.8; P = 0.002). Conclusion Significant improvement was observed in sleep‐related QOL and behavioral problems in children with OSA during long‐term follow‐up after adenotonsillectomy.
