Adaptation to Climate Change by Rural Ethnic Communities of Northern Thailand

Abstract: Northern Thailand has been experiencing the impact of climate change due to its fragile agro-ecosystem, inhabited by a resource-poor population. The study, conducted in a mountainous landscape of Doi Mae Salong area in Northern Thailand, explores the farmers' perceptions of climate change, its impact on farming, and adaptation measures undertaken by the two ethnic communities in the area for coping with climate change impacts. The data were collected through a structured questionnaire survey of ninety farm hou… Show more

“…The IPCC's fifth assessment report showed that food production in Asia will vary and decline in many regions under the impact of climate change [37]. Rajendra et al focused on climate change impacts on farming in northern Thailand, where the vulnerability of farm households persists under the negative impact of climate change [54]. Yamei et al assessed the adverse effects of future climate on rice yields and provided potential adaptive measures [67].…”

“…To alleviate the severity of climate change's impact on farm production and poverty, adaptation strategies, such as new crop varieties, changing planting times, homestead gardening, planting trees and migration, are vital approaches [6]. Furthermore, research that projects climate change's impacts on poverty or that pinpoints especially vulnerable regions and the vulnerability of farm household income under the impact of climate change is still needed [53,54]. Using statistical analysis, the current study attempts to derive an understanding of regional characteristics in terms of income and agriculture and to assess the contributions of different components on the observed total variance of income and cost, with an eye towards determining regional vulnerability to climate change and projecting the potential effects of climate change on poverty in Bangladesh.…”

“…A few of the farmers stated a medium level of practice (six percent) and no farmers reported a high level of drought coping strategies. Farmers' coping strategies to CC can be influenced by several factors such as climatic, social and economic factors [50,51]. Rural populations are the most vulnerable to CC, as they usually lack the necessary resources to cope with the changing climatic conditions.…”

“…The rural farmers are highly vulnerable to the consequences of climate change, to droughts, excessive temperatures and heavy rainfall [Maluleke & Mokwena, 2017]. The change in climate pattern has a negative impact on farming and the vulnerability of farm households is related to the lack of knowledge and financial resources [Shrestha et al, 2017]. Gurgu (2010) discussed various aspects related to climate change, underlying that this phenomenon is one important concern at the global level, both governments and people being responsible in shaping the future.…”
