Adaptation to space conditions of novel bacterial species isolated from the International Space Station revealed by functional gene annotations and comparative genome analysis

Lukasz M. Szydlowski,
Alper A. Bulbul,
Anna C. Simpson
et al.

Abstract: BackgroundThe extreme environment of the International Space Station (ISS) puts selective pressure on microorganisms unintentionally introduced during its 20+ years of service as a low-orbit science platform and human habitat. Such pressure leads to the development of new features not found in the Earth-bound relatives, which enable them to adapt to unfavorable conditions.ResultsIn this study, we generated the functional annotation of the genomes of five newly identified species of Gram-positive bacteria, four… Show more

“…In future work we would like to explore other possibilities and ultimately migrate towards a more universal solution, such as gene content. Only then can recent developments in augmented functional annotation be efficiently utilized, as we already have shown in other applications (Maranga et al, 2023, Koehler Leman et al, 2023, Szydlowski et al, 2023).…”

“…Currently the only accepted functional annotation software is HUMAnN (any version), which requires data to be processed in a particular way. In future work we would like to explore other possibilities and ultimately migrate towards a more universal solution, such as genes as then one can take advantage of recent developments in augmented functional annotation, as we already have shown in other applications (Maranga et al, 2023, Koehler Leman et al, 2023, Szydlowski et al, 2023).…”

“…In a recent study titled “Adaptation to space conditions of novel bacterial species isolated from the ISS revealed by functional gene annotations and comparative genome analysis” ( Szydlowski et al, 2023 ), the researchers investigated the adaptation of microorganisms unintentionally introduced to the extreme environment of the ISS over its 20+ years of service. The study revealed that these microorganisms have undergone adaptation to life in space.…”
