Adapted design generation for Turkish vernacular housing grammar

Abstract: Turkish vernacular housing architecture is in danger of extinction. Original village patterns deteriorate due to new developments, which are discordant with existing settlements and social lifestyle. This paper claims to ensure the cultural continuity of Turkish vernacular housing architecture by adapting new residential designs to the existent environment with a parametric shape grammar method. Originally, vernacular house plans included the allocation of space around a hall: a Sofa. This study firstly expose… Show more

“…By obtaining the dimension and area relationship, the average space dimensions were extracted and the hospital plans examined were revealed with their spatial relations in this context and rule sets were created. Shape grammar method was carried out by following the adaptation of the space dimensions and traditional plan mentioned in Erem and Ermiyagil's study [17]. All the data obtained were used in the genetic algorithm to produce space by using the Grasshopper add-on and Galapagos module of the Rhino program and a model was defined by a circuit.…”

“…Considering Duarte [11] and Wang et al [12], the residential design world can be described as a hierarchical structure comprising materials, components, parts, rooms, dwellings, housings, neighborhoods, blocks, settlements, and towns, of which the housing, neighborhoods, and blocks have been the focus of the present study (Figure 1). Regarding housing, the individual buildings which comprised similarly shaped elements [13] were analyzed, such as in the case of Erem et al [14] who added Turkish rural housing grammars to the new rules, which can improve the adaptability of traditional housing after reconstruction. With regard to neighborhood, combinations of similar housing were considered, such as in the case of Herbert et al [15].…”

“…Materials are the most commonly used construction variable because they are the most rapidly updated and are closely related to advances in construction technology. Resident behavior variables were ranked according to the number of variables involved in the study of the continuity of residential architecture (top 10) in the following order: construction [43], cooking [46], rites [56], parties [39], sleep [40], socializing [8], maintenance [56], storage [49], rest [36], and feeding [46]. Construction, cooking, and ritual behaviors are also the primary focus of behavioral research because they are related to the everyday lives and spirituality of residential consumers.…”
