Adapting data management education to support clinical research projects in an academic medical center

Abstract: BackgroundLibrarians and researchers alike have long identified research data management (RDM) training as a need in biomedical research. Despite the wealth of libraries offering RDM education to their communities, clinical research is an area that has not been targeted. Clinical RDM (CRDM) is seen by its community as an essential part of the research process where established guidelines exist, yet educational initiatives in this area are unknown.Case PresentationLeveraging my academic library’s experience sup… Show more

“…In a survey after five RDM courses held in 2013-2017, 77% of the respondents (n = 31) considered the course useful, and 58% said they were interested in advanced education when available (Wiljes & Cimiano, 2019). In the feedback of the four clinical RDM workshops, respondents (n = 113), who were mainly project coordinators, faculty members, and managers, expressed a need to learn RDM from many viewpoints and aspects like IPR, data security and privacy, and data curation (Read, 2019).…”

“…A number of existing studies share examples of current RDM services and researcher needs (e.g., [3][4][5][6], [10]). However, the types of services needed may differ by institution and research community.…”

“…The demand for RDM services has been strong, particularly in the health sector [6]. Accordingly, health science libraries have developed a wide range of RDM services: instruction and consultation for data management plans (DMPs) [7]; training on data analysis tools and online bioinformatics application guides [8]; qualitative data analysis, data visualization, and data wrangling [9]; training on clinical data management [9,10]; developing data dictionaries and standardized data request forms [11]; and file management, assigning metadata to data, naming variables, and finding an appropriate data repository [12]. A recurring theme characterizing RDM services is collaboration among stakeholders.…”

“…One roadshow focuses on data management: "Building Your Research Data Management Toolkit: Integrating RDM into Your Liaison Work," which has its roots in a 2015 ACRL preconference workshop [3]. Read describes success in hosting library workshops for clinical researchers at New York University's Health Sciences Library [47]. These workshops were primarily attended by clinical professionals such as research coordinators, research managers, and faculty, but could be applied to library staff as well.…”
