Adapting Legacy Home Appliances to Home Network Systems UsingWeb Services

Abstract: This paper presents a framework that adapts the conventional home electric appliances with the infrared remote controls (legacy appliances) to the emerging home network system (HNS). The proposed method extensively uses the concept of service-oriented architecture to improve application interoperability among multi-vendor appliances. We first prepare APIs that assist a PC to send infrared signals to the appliances. We then aggregate the APIs within self-contained service components, so that each of the compone… Show more

“…To cope with both the emerging HNS and the legacy appliances, Nakamura et al have proposed a framework that can deal with legacy appliances with conventional infrared remote controllers [34,35]. The key ideas are (1) to use a programmable infrared remote controller to control the different appliances, and (2) to rely on a service-oriented architecture (SOA) (see [29,36]).…”

“…In this article, we present the approach we used to specify and then to validate a set of HNS integrated services that have been developed by Nakamura et al [34,35]. Our approach relies on a Design by Contract strategy [31,32].…”

“…The great advantage of the HNS lies in the flexible integration of different home appliances through the network. The integration achieves value-added integrated services 8) . For example, integrating a TV, a DVD player, lights, sound systems and curtains implements a DVD Theater Service, which allows a user to watch movies in a theater-like atmosphere †1 Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) †2 Kobe University †3 Joseph Fourier University (Grenoble I) within a single operation.…”
