Adapting principles of developmental biology and agent-based modelling for automated urban residential layout design

Abstract: The objective is to automate the design of residential layouts as an aid for planners dealing with complex situations. The algorithm COULD, applied to sites with various shapes, is guided by the goal of many mutually accessible residences and can be set to generate orthogonal or irregular road layouts. Using biological principles of genomic equivalence, conditional differentiation and induction, it grows from an embryonic 'adaptive cell' into a plan. Cells are 'genetically identical' with full development pote… Show more

“…Cruz et al 79 use CA to allow the basic formation of cells to self-organize to form functional floor layouts. MASs, however, are used in several layout-generating GSs to understand the evolution of spaces within a given environment, 80,81 creating organic-self-organized spaces 82,83 or incorporating the behaviour of occupants to achieve socio-special comfort. 84 GA and ParaD are used to generate layouts that attend to occupants’ physical needs.…”

“…For example, these applications include creating testing environments for robot navigation [13], [14], an interactive tool to aid games development [15] and even as a tool to aid in urban design [16]. This section will briefly review previous work into this field of research.…”

“…The angularity and irregularity of the road network in Figure 1(a) provide a rigorous test of feeder bus planning and, at first sight, appear somewhat inimical to the insertion of a bus route. However, a planning bias against the cul-de-sac has limited the number and extent of dead-end branch roads (Sun and Taplin, 2017). Furthermore, the high proportion of roads in shared circuits (ringness) not only gives good access between dwellings but also enables a bus route to serve this planned suburban development with little difficulty.…”
