Adapting Web-based Instruction to Residents’ Knowledge Improves Learning Efficiency

Abstract: BACKGROUND:Increased clinical demands and decreased available time accentuate the need for efficient learning in postgraduate medical training. Adapting Web-based learning (WBL) to learners' prior knowledge may improve efficiency. OBJECTIVE:We hypothesized that time spent learning would be shorter and test scores not adversely affected for residents who used a WBL intervention that adapted to prior knowledge. DESIGN: Randomized, crossover trial.SETTING: Academic internal medicine residency program continuity c… Show more

“…As demonstrated in previous studies (Kerfoot et al 2007;Cook et al 2008;Pereira et al 2008), the web/podcast participants were as successful on their post-test as those participating in the live lecture (although it is not known how those who did not complete the post-test would have performed, as mentioned in the ''Study limitations'' section). The participants in this study are part of generation ''y'' and ''x'' (Sandars & Morrison 2007).…”

“…Web-based learning modules that adapted to residents' prior knowledge decreased the time on task without a decrement in knowledge test scores. 28 Use of interactive spaced education to teach the physical examination significantly enhanced learning outcomes. 29 Visual literacy training with art improved physical observation skills.…”
