Adaptive electron beam shaping using a photoemission gun and spatial light modulator

Abstract: The need for precisely defined beam shapes in photoelectron sources has been well established. In this paper, we use a spatial light modulator and simple shaping algorithm to create arbitrary, detailed transverse laser shapes with high fidelity. We transmit this shaped laser to the photocathode of a high voltage dc gun. Using beam currents where space charge is negligible, and using an imaging solenoid and fluorescent viewscreen, we show that the resultant beam shape preserves these detailed features with simi… Show more

“…Furthermore, the resulting measured emittances and longitudinal current profile show excellent agreement with corresponding GPT simulations, and meet the stated 95% emittance and peak current specifications of the LCLS-II injector design. Additionally, we have shown that the transverse laser shape plays an important role in determining the optimal emittances, adding further relevance to the recent demonstration of accurate, arbitrary transverse laser shaping at Cornell [21,22]. In conclusion, this work shows that DC gun based photoinjectors can produce cathode emittance dominated beams with single bunch beam quality rivaling that produced by RF gun based injectors for charges up to 300 pC, and represents a significant expansion of the beam dynamics regime for which DC gun-based injectors are applicable.…”

“…As mentioned above, J. Maxson et al [19] have used liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) spatial light modulators (SLM) to spatially modulate the drive laser at 532 nm wavelength at Cornell. A. Halavanau et al [26] have used a microlens array to experimentally characterize and shape the beam transverse profile.…”

“…We assume a linear transformation between the two planes, which takes into account magnification, rotation, skewing, and mirror imaging. We follow the procedures described in [19]. It is important to note that this method can be used in any target plane as long as the imaging process is linear.…”

“…The use of dynamical and digitally controllable laser shaping techniques for the drive laser has been demonstrated in photoinjectors, as in Refs. [10,18,19]. In our case, the DMD enables quantitative comparison between the traditional scanning method and our proposed ghost imaging method.…”
