Adaptive Hierarchical-Concurrent Multiscale Modeling of Ductile Failure in Heterogeneous Metallic Materials

Abstract: This article addresses two topics on multiscale modeling of heterogeneous metals and alloys. The first topic focuses on developing an adaptive hierarchical-concurrent multilevel modeling framework for ductile fracture. The microstructure of aluminum alloys, for example, is characterized by a dispersion of heterogeneities such as silicon and intermetallics in a ductile aluminum matrix. The multilevel model invokes two-way coupling, viz. hierarchical models for homogenized constitutive modeling and concurrent mo… Show more

“…In this endeavor for a fast tool, yet able to give accurate descriptions of the structure's capacity and damage evolution, one may stress the so-called concurrent multi-scale approaches. These have been already applied to simulate fracture propagation in composites (Talebi et al 2015;Ghosh 2015), nanocomposite (Ren et al 2016), but also in the study of masonry structures (Lorenzo Leonetti et al, 2018;Driesen et al, 2021;Lourenço et al, 2020). A concurrent multiscale approach contemplates two well-separated scales, i.e.…”

“…In the following years, the developments of VCFEM were presented for linear elastic problems [15] and elastic-plasticity problems [16], as well as failure analysis [17]. Over the last few years, the VCFEM was further developed to address some engineering problems [18,19]. In addition, some contributions had been devoted by other researchers to develop this method to analyze the thermomechanical [20] and the effective properties [21] of heterogeneous materials.…”

“…This approach has the advantage of enabling the flow of information between scales, which eliminates many of the uncertainties inherent in the information-passing paradigm. For recent examples, see [13][14] [15]. As in sequential multiscale simulations, models must be developed and applied at multiple scales, with the added complication of developing appropriate interfaces between the models that enable them to be used concurrently.…”
