Adaptive Modulation for OFDM-Based Multiple Description Progressive Image Transmission

Abstract: Abstract-This paper addresses the use of adaptive modulation in progressive image transmission with multiple description coding in conjunction with an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system. Specifically, two adaptive systems are considered: variable rate with fixed power, and variable rate with variable power. An algorithm is proposed to allocate power and constellation size at each subchannel by maximizing the throughput. Simulation results confirm that cross-layer optimization with adaptiv… Show more

“…We used QPSK modulation and considered both perfect and imperfect CSI. It should be noted that more sophisticated modulation schemes could be used to further improve the system performance, such as the one discussed in [32]. However, for the sake of simplicity and better understanding of the fundamental impact of the time and frequency diversities on the construction of the 2-D OFDM block, a fixed modulation scheme using QPSK was chosen.…”

“…Particularly for image or video transmission, throughput maximization has been used as an alternative to distortion minimization [7,8] due to its simplicity. When instantaneous channel quality information is perfectly known, throughput maximization is close to distortion minimization.…”

“…There are various researchers that have used OFDM for image transmission e.g. Fatima [37], Shayegannia et al [38], Sheikh et al [39], Sharma et al [40], Sharma et al [41], Wang et al [42], Salah [43], Tan et al [44]. The prime reason behind the adoption of OFDM for image transmission is its capability to mitigate interference cause due to symbols and frequency.…”
