Adaptive network coding schemes for satellite communications

Abstract: In this paper, we propose two novel physical layer aware adaptive network coding and coded modulation schemes for time variant channels. The proposed schemes have been applied to different satellite communications scenarios with different Round Trip Times (RTT). Compared to adaptive network coding, and classical non-adaptive network coding schemes for time variant channels, as benchmarks, the proposed schemes demonstrate that adaptation of packet transmission based on the channel variation and corresponding er… Show more

“…Those ave. no. of packets are drawn from evaluating the delay encountered at zero waiting time [12], when the system is adapted to the virtualized channel. Thus, the variance between the virtualization schemes is negligible, or small compared to no-virtualization.…”

“…High latency has direct significant impact on performance and quality of services (QoS) of communications systems, especially when using TCP/IP applications [1,6]. Optimum system performance can be achieved by improved latency, with next generation 5G networks aiming at maximum of 1ms latency with 1000-fold capacity [7]- [9]. Performance metrics like Throughput, IP packet transmission delay (IPTD), and jitter or packet delay variation (IPDV) are affected directly by latency [1,7,10].…”

Performance metrics like Throughput, IP packet transmission delay (IPTD), and jitter or packet delay variation (IPDV) are affected directly by latency [1,7,10]. This is more pronounced in satellite IP networks, especially with satellites in geostationary earth orbit (GEO) due to longer propagation paths and additional transmission and processing delays from end-to-end [11,12].…”

“…Consequently, more energy savings can be achieved [1]. Moreover, when the network coded schemes are specifically designed for enhancing their awareness with respect to the system characteristics, higher performance gains can be achieved in terms of delay, throughput or energy efficiency [2,3]. One of the most important issue to be considered in satellite communications is energy efficiency.…”
