Adding NBPT to urea increases N use efficiency of maize and decreases the abundance of N-cycling soil microbes under reduced fertilizer-N rate on the North China Plain

Abstract: Urease inhibitor (UI) and nitrification inhibitor (NI) can reduce N losses from agricultural soils but effects of inhibitors on N cycle are unclear. A field experiment was conducted with maize to test effects of UI (N-(n-Butyl) thiophosphoric, NBPT) and NI (3,4-dimethylepyrazolephosphate, DMPP) on N uptake and N-cycling soil microbes. Five treatments were imposed: no N fertilizer input (CK), conventional fertilization (CF) and 80% of urea input with NBPT (80%U+UI), with DMPP (80%U+NI) and with half NBPT and ha… Show more

“…The gene abundance of nirK substantially increased in brown soil paddy fields with prolonged usage of HQ+DCD urea fertilizer. Notably, a significant negative correlation was observed between the gene abundance of nirK and NH 4 + as well as NO 3 − , which contrasts with previous findings in arid soils [38]. Based on RDA analysis, both soil SOM and TP exhibited a significant positive correlation with the nirK gene, supporting previous research [39].…”

“…The FN RE increase was 2.8% compared to the UAN treatment ( Table 2 ). The fertilizers containing N-NH 2 in combination with NBPT increased nitrogen use efficiency of maize [ 84 , 85 ], wheat [ 86 , 87 ] and others crops [ 88 ]. A significant FN RE increase was also observed in maize fertilized with both UAN NHA-A and UAN NHA-N .…”

“…At the soil level, urea is separated from N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT), the latter being the true inhibitor of urease activity [35,36], reducing the overall nitrogen loss rate as NH 3 [13,37,38]. NBPT-treated urea reduces NH 3 loss by approximately 53% [6].…”
