Addition of Chitosan to Silicate Cross-Linked PEO for Tuning Osteoblast Cell Adhesion and Mineralization

Abstract: The addition of chitosan to silicate (Laponite) cross-linked poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is used for tuning nanocomposite material properties and tailoring cellular adhesion and bioactivity. By combining the characteristics of chitosan (which promotes cell adhesion and growth, antimicrobial) with properties of PEO (prevents protein and cell adhesion) and those of Laponite (bioactive), the resulting material properties can be used to tune cellular adhesion and control biomineralization. Here, we present the hydr… Show more

“…3 Clay consumption (geophagy) is commonly observed in reptiles, birds and mammals. 171,146 Several theories such as removal of toxins present in the diet, treatment of gastrointestinal ailments such as diarrhea via the antimicrobial components of clay minerals, mineral supplementation, and alleviating stomach hyperacidity have been suggested for the geophagic behavior of animals. 47 In many cases of geophagy, minerals from the kaolin group were identied as major components consumed among the clay minerals.…”

“…5,15,16 Gaharwar et al used chitosan to modify the material properties of PEO-silicate gels to tune cellular adhesion and control biomineralization on a cell-biomaterial interface. 17 Many investigators have also evaluated cell-specific properties on gels made by different crosslinkers. [18][19][20] The multifunctional gels created previously, as summarized by Leach et al, 21 depict the potential of current hydrogels in controlling cellular behavior, integration of engineered materials with host or transplanted tissue, and inductive factor presentation.…”

“…While charged chitosan enhanced cell adhesion and growth, PEO inhibited protein and cell adhesion. Additionally, Laponite and chitosan‐based NC hydrogel promoted the differentiation of osteoblast cells showing that this scaffold can be further used for bone repair studies . Another Laponite/PEO NC hydrogel as biomaterials was described by the same group.…”
