Addition of Orange Pomace to Orange Juice Attenuates the Increases in Peak Glucose and Insulin Concentrations after Sequential Meal Ingestion in Men with Elevated Cardiometabolic Risk

Abstract: OPF consumed with breakfast may lower postprandial glycemic and insulinemic responses to typical meal ingestion in men with increased cardiometabolic risk. This trial is registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT01963416.

“…Moreover, similar effects on metabolism were observed with other natural products, such as grape [ 72 , 73 , 74 ], green tea [ 75 , 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 ], orange juice [ 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 ], hibiscus [ 84 , 85 , 86 ], Aloe vera [ 87 ], Wild bitter [ 88 ] and berberine or barberry [ 89 , 90 ]. In turn, these food ingredients have been related to health promotion, chronic disease prevention, and adjunctive therapy in individuals with MetS and NAFLD.…”

“…Despite this high presence of sugar in pure OJ, particular phenolic compounds and flavonoids present in OJ protected individuals from metabolic disturbances. As such, some studies investigated the correlation between OJ consumption and the improvement of metabolic syndrome parameters [ 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 ].…”

“…It has been proposed that high viscous fibre can lead to a decrease in postprandial glycaemia and insulin response [17], while the effect of soluble fibre on fasting glucose and insulin levels has been demonstrated in overweight adults [18]. Several acute and chronic studies have used fruit juice as a matrix for fibre enrichment, obtaining remarkable effects on the postprandial glycaemic response of both healthy subjects and men with metabolic risk when doses of fibre were moderately high [19][20][21][22]. However, there is little evidence of the effect of dietary fibre intake on glycaemic profile, satiety and the secretion of GI hormones on a healthy adult population in the case of non-sweetened fruit juice enriched with an extract of the fruit's own fibre (albedo and flavedo obtained from the orange peel), a novel by-product of orange juice production composed of different types of soluble and insoluble fibre.…”

“…Dietary fibre is also abundant in grape pomace (Monro et al, 2016). A lot of studies have revealed that it might be involved in disease prevention and health promotion, including attenuation of blood cholesterol and glucose (Dong et al, 2016), laxative effect (Bliss et al, 2014) and reduction of risk in colon cancer (Vulcan et al, 2015), heart disease (Kim & Je, 2016) and obesity (Han et al, 2015). Therefore, it is of greater importance for full utilisation of grape pomace in order to turn environmental waste into high-value products.…”
