Additional antiprotozoal constituents from Cuphea pinetorum, a plant used in Mayan traditional medicine to treat diarrhoea

Abstract: In addition to kaempferol and quercetin already found in the roots from Cuphea pinetorum, bioassay-guided fractionation of the crude extract of the aerial part of this species gave four flavonoid glycosides, quercetin-3-O-alpha-rhamnopyranoside, luteolin-7-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, apigenin-7-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranoside and apigenin-7-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, as well as squalen and beta-sitosterol. In vitro antiamoebic and antigiardial activities of isolated compounds indicated that kaempferol is the principal… Show more

“…In highly uneducated societies, like Pakistan, where literacy rate is 34% and only 20% population has access to safe water supply and sanitation and even lesser in the rural area, the prevalence of parasitic infection is a common problem (Iliyas, 2006) which requires effective treatment. Many options exist for the treatment of parasitic infection including herbal medicine, which are said to be more cost effective with less side effects (Dans, 2007;Shahab-uddin, 2006;Al-Habbal, 1984;Calzada, 2005). Some work has been done regarding the prevalence of HIPP in Pakistan but there were few studies conducted to compare allopathic and herbal modalities for the treatment of amoebiasis (Khan, 2008;Ranque, 2004).…”

“…The results showed that 21 (twenty-one) methanolic extracts obtained from the species studied brought about death or growth inhibition in trophozoites of Giardia lamblia. Aside from the scarce investigation of the giardicidal activity of extracts and fractions carried out in Africa, Brazil, China, Cuba, India, USA, Malaysia, Venezuela and Thailand, the largest contribution to this area of study has come from Mexico, where numerous plant species are used in popular medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal illnesses, which has in turn stimulated validation studies (Calzada et al, 1998b;1999b;2005;2006;Ponce-Macotela et al, 2001;TapiaPérez et al, 2003;Peraza-Sánchez et al, 2005).…”

“…Formononetin, an isofl avone isolated from Dalbergia frutescens, exhibited intense activity with an IC 50 below that of metronidazole ® , the reference drug for the giardiasis treatment and employed as a positive control in the assays (Khan et al, 2000). Eleven compounds, including fl avonoids, steroids and triterpenes were isolated from the genus Geranium, represented by the species Geranium mexicanum and Geranium niveum (Calzada et al, 1999a;2001b;2005).…”
