Abstract:The prevalence of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is growing worldwide; the survival of these patients requires renal replacement therapy (RRT, a complex and costly treatment). Over 20% of the patients that start RTT had diabetes. Limited evidence on the effect of comorbidities on the cost of RRT exists. This review summarizes the available evidence on the effect of diabetes mellitus (DM) on the cost of RRT. Electronic databases were searched using key words that combined RRT with DM and cost. “…This advanced stage of kidney failure is termed end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). [5][6][7] The prevalence of ESKD is increasing globally, with Taiwan reporting the highest global incidence rate per million people (3392 cases per million people in 2016), a trend that is also reflected in the United States and many other countries (Fig. 1b).…”

Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) rely on dialysis to remove toxins and stay alive. However, hemodialysis alone is insufficient to completely remove all/major uremic toxins, resulting in the accumulation...

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
