Additions to Thelebolales (Leotiomycetes, Ascomycota): Pseudogeomyces lindneri gen. et sp. nov. and Pseudogymnoascus campensis sp. nov.

Abstract: Thelebolales are globally distributed fungi with diverse ecological characteristics. The classification of Thelebolales remains controversial to date and this study introduces two new taxa, based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses. The results of phylogenetic analyses indicated that the new taxa formed distinct lineages with strong support that were separated from the other members of Thelebolales. The new taxa described herein did not form sexual structures. The phylogenetic relationships of the new t… Show more

“…The soil samples were collected in June 2020 from the Cengong County ( 27°16’98’’N, 108°81’46’’E ) in Kaili City, Guizhou Province, China. The fungi were isolated using the methods described previously ( Zhang et al 2023 ). Colonies on PDA were incubated after 14 days at 25 °C and the cultures were placed to slowly dry at 50 °C to produce the holotypes, which were deposited in the Institute of Fungus Resources, Guizhou University, Guiyang City, Guizhou, China ( GZUIFR ).…”

“…Total DNA was extracted using the 5% chelex-100 solution as described previously ( Zhang et al 2023 ). The small subunit ( SSU ) rDNA, the internal transcribed spacer ( ITS ), the large subunit ( LSU ) rDNA, the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II ( RPB2 ) and the translation elongation factor EF-1α ( EF1A ) were PCR amplified and sequenced using primers listed in Table 1 .…”

“…These efforts have yielded notable results. Among the total accepted Pseudogymnoascus species to date (amounting to 31 species according to MycoBank, Supplementary Table S1), 20 have been taxonomically characterized within the last five years [3][4][5][6][7][8].…”

“…Phylogenetic placement of Ovadendron ( Sigler & Carmichael 1976 ) within Thelebolales is revealed here for the first time. Morphologically, the production of two types of conidia distinguishes Beskidomyces from most other related genera in the Pseudeurotiaceae (e.g., Sigler & Carmichael 1976 , Sigler et al 2000 , Sogonov et al 2005 , Zhang et al 2020 , 2021 , 2023 ; though Leuconeurospora sometimes may produce both conidia and arthroconidia, Malloch et al 2016 ). The type species, Beskidomyces laricis , was isolated only once from the resin of Larix decidua ssp.…”
