Additive genetic relationships between heifer pregnancy and scrotal circumference in Nellore cattle1

Abstract: To estimate heritability (h2) for yearling heifer pregnancy and to estimate the genetic correlation between heifer pregnancy and scrotal circumference, 18,145 records of Nellore heifers exposed to breeding at an age of approximately 14 mo and 25,466 records of contemporary young bulls were analyzed. Heifer pregnancy was considered as a categorical trait, with the value 1 (success) assigned to heifers that were pregnant after rectal palpation approximately 60 d after the end of a 90-d breeding season and the va… Show more

“…Bos indicus breeds have on average later ages at puberty than Bos taurus breeds. Eler et al (2004) argues that because puberty is later, genetic variability for fertility traits like heifer pregnancy rate seems to be much higher than that in Bos taurus breeds These findings correspond with the results of this study. The Afrikaner is an indigenous breed to South Africa and classified as Bos taurus africanus (Frisch et al, 1997;Hanotte et al, 2002); animals that have similar characteristics to both Bos indicus and Bos taurus breeds.…”

“…Also, the contemporary groups were small due to the exclusion of homogenous groups. When Eler et al (2004) used the weaning management of heifers as contemporary groups, they found that it led to the exclusion of 23% of the data (due to homogenous groups) but concluded that heifer pregnancy is highly heritable, regardless of the contemporary group definition.…”

“…Using 986 Hereford heifers, they obtained a heritability estimate of 0.14 with a standard error of 0.09. In a larger data set, Eler et al (2004) used a categorical animal model and method R to obtain heritability estimates (standard error) of 0.61 (0.10) and 0.68 (0.09) for heifer pregnancy. These estimates are unusually large, and may reflect the pitfalls of using an animal threshold model jointly with a heuristic approach to estimation.…”

“…In beef cattle, focus has been on calving date (Bourdon and Brinks, 1983;Buddenberg et al, 1990), or the related calving day (Ponzoni, 1992) or days to calving (Meyer et al, 1990;Johnston and Bunter, 1996;Donoghue et al, 2004a). Recently, heifer pregnancy status and the outcome of subsequent rebreeding have attracted interest (Evans et al, 1999;Doyle et al, 2000;Eler et al, 2004). Calving success (CS) has been studied as well (Meyer et al, 1990;Mercadante et al, 2003;Donoghue et al, 2004d).…”

“…Nevertheless, in a recent study, Eler et al (2004) also found high heritability for HP14 even with the animal model (0.68).…”
