Additive manufacturing for prostheses development: state of the art

Abstract: Purpose Medical devices are undergoing rapid changes because of the increasing affordability of advanced technologies like additive manufacturing (AM) and three-dimensional scanning. New avenues are available for providing solutions and comfort that were not previously conceivable. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the research on developing prostheses using AM to understand the opportunities and challenges in the domain. Various studies on prosthesis development using AM are in… Show more

“…Streamline production activities, reduce lead times, and improve overall productivity (Anzolin & Andreoni, 2023;Bueno et al, 2020;Krzywdzinski & Jo, 2022;Mortimer, 2006;Syed et al, 2020;Wilson, 2010) 3D printing Enables on-demand production, reducing lead times, inventory costs, and waste (Bueno et al, 2020;Chi et al, 2022;Dilberoglu et al, 2017;Ferreira et al, 2023;Savsani et al, 2023) systematic planning, implementation, and monitoring of all activities to improve product quality or services, thereby enhancing customer satisfaction (Claver et al, 2003). I4.0 technologies can enhance customer satisfaction when integrated with QM principles such as Total Quality Management (TQM), Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and ISO Standards (Chiarini, 2020;Nicholas, 2016;Patyal & Maddulety, 2015).…”

“…However, with advancements in technology and material science, functional parts are being fabricated using the AM techniques. 2,3 The technology has attracted the attention of researchers both in industry and academia. The ASTM Standard F2792 group classified AM into seven categories based on the operating principle.…”

“…Additive manufacturing (AM) is a flourishing fabrication technique in which intricate three-dimensional (3D) objects are manufactured through the addition of fine successive filaments of materials in a layered manner by computer numerical control (CNC) systems with minimum waste of material and high production flexibility (García-Collado et al, 2022;Tiwary et al, 2022b). Since the emergence of AM as a manufacturing technique in different industrial fields like medical (Savsani et al, 2023;Shakibania et al, 2022;Tiwary et al, 2019), manufacturing tools (Equbal et al, 2022;Lalegani Dezaki et al, 2021; and constructions (Ali et al, 2022;Pajonk et al, 2022), various types of AM processes are evolved to prepare appropriate physical and mechanical characteristics of the manufactured objects. Considering the definite advantages of each strategy, the merits of material extrusion-based (MEX) technique over competing technologies, including low inventory requirements, lowtemperature process and wide spectrum of print materials, confirm the capability of the MEX technique to play an inevitable role in the future of AM technologies (Maidin et al, 2023;Sun et al, 2023;Tiwary and Malik, 2021).…”
