Additive Manufacturing Process Parameter Influence on Mechanical Strength of Adhesive Joints, Preliminary Activities

Abstract: The work illustrates how building parameters of the Additive Manufacturing process Fused Filament Fabrication can affect not only the mechanical properties but also the surface wettability and morphology. Wettability and morphology are relevant factors in bonded joints performance. Advantages of polymeric additive manufacturing are to allow a re-design of components with locally controlled properties and integrated functions. Major limitations are related to the lack of material testing standardization and cons… Show more

“…The technique helps us to determine the extent to which the effect of an individual variable is a major component (Girden, 2023). In very simple terms, ANOVA helps us to evaluate the influence of each factor on the outputs, identify its interactions and estimate if the factor is significant (Bergonzi et al, 2021;Frascio et al, 2019;Ghani et al, 2004).…”

“…Kovan et al [ 71 , 72 ] used FFF to manufacture SLJs and butt-joints with PLA substrates to experimentally assess the effect of changing printing orientation and layer height ( Figure 13 ). The authors design strategy is based on the observation that AM parameters affect the component quality, and in particular the surface morphology [ 73 , 74 , 75 ]. This can be used to enhance the mechanical effect of adhesion [ 21 , 76 ].…”

“…However, the mechanical properties of materials used in additive manufacturing can vary, especially with temperature changes. Within the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) additive manufacturing process, various building parameters, including nozzle temperature, print speed, and layer thickness, can exert an influence on not only the mechanical properties but also the surface wettability and morphology of the fabricated object (Frascio et al, 2019). Furthermore, shape memory alloys (SMAs) and shape memory polymers (SMPs) exhibit distinct mechanical properties at different temperature ranges (Kitamura, 2021).…”
