Shot Distribution and Accuracy in Senior and Youth International Basketball Games: Changes over the Decade of the 2010s

This study aimed to investigate the changes in shot distribution and accuracy in senior and under-17 international basketball tournaments in the 2010s. A retrospective cross-sectional design was employed, and a total of 1055 games from 20 world-level tournaments held between 2010 and 2019 were analyzed. The tournaments held in 2010 were played under the old three-point line (6.25 m), and the rest of the tournaments were played under the new three-point line (6.75 m). The numbers of two- and three-point shot attempts in each game were normalized to 100 possessions. Differences in mean values of two- and three-point shot attempts were analyzed by a two-way (category × year) between-subjects analysis of variance (ANOVA). Differences in the success rates of two- and three-point shots were analyzed by Fisher’s exact test. There was no significant category × year interaction for two-point shot attempts. However, there were significant main effects of category and year for two-point shot attempts. The number of two-point shot attempts increased significantly in 2012 and, in 2016, returned to a level not significantly different from that in 2010, independent of categories. There was a significant category × year interaction for three-point shot attempts. The number of three-point shot attempts decreased significantly in 2012 and, by 2016, returned to a level not significantly different from that in 2010 in senior men and under-17 women. There was no significant change in the number of three-point shot attempts in under-17 men. The effect of the extension of the three-point line on shot accuracy was limited. Differences in shot accuracy were prominent between age categories: the accuracy was lower in under-17 games than in senior games for both sexes. Although under-17 men attempted fewer three-point shots than senior men, under-17 women attempted a similar number of or more three-point shots than senior women. These findings can contribute to a better understanding of age and sex differences in recent trends in international basketball.

Better Offensive Strategy in Basketball: A Two-Point or a Three-Point Shot?

To better understand and explore the development trend of the offensive strategies of the world’s top basketball leagues, this study took NBA shooting data in the regular seasons from 2009/2010 to 2018/2019 as the samples and analysed the relationships between the shooting score ratio and game win probability, and the practical application of offensive strategies in games. The results showed that (1) increasing the number and the percentage of three-point offenses in the game can improve the probability of winning. However, too many two-point shots can affect the team’s winning probability to a certain extent. (2) The strong teams in the NBA focused more on the outside offense, while the weak teams focused more on the inside offense. (3) Statistical data further showed that whether a team’s opponent is strong or weak, taking the offensive strategy that tends toward the outside shot can lead to a higher game win probability than the offensive strategy that tends toward the inside offense.

Clustering Performances in Elite Basketball Matches According to the Anthropometric Features of the Line-ups Based on Big Data Technology

The aims of this study were: 1) to conduct a descriptive analysis of the anthropometric features of the line-ups of strong teams (top 16) in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup; 2) to group the line-ups mentioned above into different clusters based on their average height, weight, and body mass index (BMI); and 3) to explore the performance variables that discriminate between various line-up clusters. The play-by-play statistics were collected from 104 team objects in 67 games and 525 line-ups were analyzed using two-step cluster and discriminant analysis. Line-ups were classified into four groups: low average height and weight with middle BMI (LowH–LowW–MiddleBMI); high average height and low average weight with low BMI (HighH–LowW–LowBMI); low average height and high average weight with high BMI (LowH–HighW–HighBMI); high average height and weight with middle BMI (HighH–HighW–MiddleBMI). The results of the discriminant analysis demonstrated that LowH–LowW–MiddleBMI line-ups had the least time played and the lowest offensive rating, but the best offensive rebounds, turnovers, and fastest game pace performance; HighH–LowW–LowBMI line-ups demonstrated the best defensive rating but performed poorly with a low value of assists and a high value of turnovers; the LowH–HighW–HighBMI group achieved the best time played statistics but had the lowest number of free throws made; the HighH–HighW–MiddleBMI group had a higher number of assists and a higher offensive rating and 2-point field goal performance, while also achieving the lowest number of offensive rebounds and ball possessions. These results provide novel insights for coaches and performance analysts to better understand the technical characteristics of different line-ups in elite basketball competitions.
