Addressing the cross‐country applicability of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB): A structured review of multi‐country TPB studies

Abstract: The theories of reasoned action and planned behaviour (TRA/TPB) have received substantial research interest from consumer behaviourists. One important area of interest which has not been adequately researched concerns the impact of national culture on the TRA/TPB components and interrelationships. To date, no systematic assessment of the impact of culture on the TRA/TPB model relationships has been undertaken. In order to understand the potential impact of culture on the TRA/TPB model relationships a structure… Show more

“…The model also indicates that the BI towards one specific behavior is a function of three predictors, namely attitude (ATT), subjective norms (SN), and perceived behavioral control (PBC). The TPB effectively covers an individual's social and non-volitional behavior and presents an adequate performance in terms of explanatory power [23,24]. Therefore, the model has been widely employed in studies on various pro-environmental behaviors, including energy conservation [16,19,25], water conservation [26][27][28], waste recycling and management [29,30], green hotel or office occupation [31,32].…”

“…Hassan, Shiu and Parry [28] systematically reviewed studies that utilized the TPB model across more than one country. They performed a systematic literature review for papers published since 2000 that applied the TPB in consumption-related topics.…”

“…A recent study by Alcántara‐Pilar and Del Barrio‐García () concludes that the approach that has consistently attracted the greatest attention in the scientific literature on business administration and marketing is that of Hofstede (). This cultural approach has also been widely accepted and implemented by several authors (Funk & Wu, ; Hassan, Shiu, & Parry, ; Liu, Chakpitak, Yodmongkol, & Cang, ). Furthermore, Hsu, Woodside, and Marshall () have demonstrated the validity of Hofstede's model when measuring cultural differences.…”
