A circular economy has been gaining momentum as the most innovative approach in business. Its proposed model, based on sustainability and new product-driven differentiated strategies of production and organizational exchange, has brought to light the need to better understand the relevance of stakeholders as a critical factor in the creation of new added value in business management. The primary purpose of this paper is to investigate how the B-Corp Certification System could contribute to a process of awareness raising in business organizations. It also focuses on the stakeholders’ commitment, within the framework of circular economy principles, and demonstrates that those companies who are adopting the certification concerning “recycling service and waste management” strongly contribute to the development in the direction of the circular economy. The analysis of the case studies shows two possible scenarios describing the circular approach in business and the different roles of stakeholders in the activation of such a virtuous path. “Social recycling” considers the key role of social participation and contribution in circular-economy related activities of primary and secondary stakeholders, and “highly regenerative recycling” aims to involve qualified stakeholders to start inter-organizational symbioses within the circular process of waste recycling. Key factors, such as industrial symbiosis, tax benefits, financial incentives, legislative harmonization, and the consumers’ behavior, represent the tenets of the circular economy model An awareness-raising perspective and the capacity on the part of companies to understand the relevance of stakeholders and the way to transform their role into the most effective lever to reinforce competitiveness is therefore necessary. Accordingly, the whole system of Benefit Corporation certification could boost business towards new business models involving stakeholders in several directions.

Product Service Systems (PSS) are increasingly complex and collaborative. For instance, manufacturing companies, service providers, and other companies collaborate and jointly develop and operate a PSS (ex: smart grid), where its constituent elements are managed and operated independently. Managerial independence and operational independence are commonly considered key characteristics of a System of Systems (SoS). Hence, a collaborative PSS exhibits System of Systems (SoSs) characteristics. These systems have previously been introduced as Product Service Systems of Systems (PSSoSs). In this paper, we propose to identify relevant uncertainties in the PSSoS design process. For this purpose, we go beyond the PSSoS concept definition and propose a comprehensive framework for PSS and PSSoS characterization. Moreover, based on both a literature review and an industrial diagnosis, we identify PSSoSs-specific design uncertainties.

Resumo: Este trabalho trata de uma atualização bibliográfica sobre sistemas produto-serviço (PSS) por meio de uma revisão da literatura entre o período de 2006 a 2011. Tendo como objetivo reorientar o consumo de produtos para uma sociedade mais sustentável, o PSS vem sendo considerado uma oportunidade competitiva, o qual oferece o uso do produto por meio de uma prestação de serviços. Nesse contexto, o trabalho tem como objetivo complementar a literatura existente sobre PSS, por meio de uma busca estruturada em bases de dados relevantes. Os trabalhos identificados apresentam informações relevantes sobre o PSS e estes são apresentados no decorrer do texto, destacando principais periódicos, autores mais citados e principal artigo utilizado como referência pela academia. A partir das publicações identificadas e interpretadas, destacam-se alguns fatoreschave que abrangem o que a literatura vem tratando sobre o tema nos últimos anos. Desta forma, analisando a produção identificada no período selecionado, apresenta-se uma síntese conclusiva ao final de cada fator-chave. Para finalizar, apresentam-se algumas sugestões de pesquisas futuras sobre o tema, destacando a necessidade de trabalhos teóricos e empíricos para maior compreensão sobre a caracterização e os benefícios de um PSS, bem como ferramentas e metodologias que facilitem a sua implantação. Abstract:This work is an update of the literature on product-service systems (PSS) through a review of the literature from 2006 to 2011. Aiming at changing consumption of products to a more sustainable society, the PSS has been considered a competitive opportunity, which offers the use of the product through the provision of services. In this context, this paper aims to complement the existing literature on PSS through a structured search of relevant journal databases. The identified studies have important information on the PSS and these are presented throughout the text, highlighting major journals, most cited authors and the main article used as reference by the academy. From the identified and interpreted publications, the paper highlights some key factors, which the literature has approached on the subject in recent years. Therefore, by analyzing the publications during the selected study period, a conclusive synthesis is presented at the end of each key-factor. Finally, some suggestions for future research on the subject are presented, highlighting the need for theoretical and empirical research to achieve better understanding about the benefits of a PSS as well as tools and methodologies that facilitate its implementation.
