Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the airway: Thirty-two-year experience

Abstract: Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the upper airway is a rare tumor, which is locally invasive and frequently amenable to resection. Although late local recurrence after resection is a feature of this tumor (up to 29 years), excellent long-term palliation is commonly achieved after both complete and incomplete resection. “…The incidence of primary tracheal tumors is \0.2 per 100,000 people per year with a prevalence of 1 per 15,000 autopsies. The most common tracheal tumor is squamous cell carcinoma followed by ACC, which together represent two-thirds of the tumors in airway [4]. Respiratory tumors arising from glandular tissue in trachea constitute 10 % of all the tracheobronchial tumors.…”

“…[17,18] Maziak ve ark.nın çalışmasında 38 hastanın 32'sinde rezeksiyon uygulanmış ve çoğu hastada submukozal ve perinöral bölgede yayılım saptanmıştır. [18] Molina ve ark.nın çalışmasında adenoid kistik karsi-sonrası uygulanan radyoterapinin sağkalımı artırdığı gösterilmiştir. Rezeke edilemeyen tümörlerde ve cerrahinin mümkün olamayacağı durumlarda primer radyoterapi yüz güldürücüdür.…”
