Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast

Abstract: Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast (ACC) is a rare tumor, comprising <0.1% of all breast cancers. It has a unique dual-cell pattern and is indistinguishable from ACC arising from salivary tissue. It is a low-grade tumor with favorable prognosis, and rare metastasis, with unique features. It is more commonly seen in older women with a mean age at diagnosis of 63, with Caucasian women being at greatest risk. Most cases present as a painful, palpable mass in the outer quadrants of the breast, and must be diag… Show more

“…Discussion of primary ACC of the breast has been limited by the number of cases as it accounts for only 0.1-1% of breast cancers [ 1 ]. It typically presents as a painful or painless sub-areolar mass, although it has also been described as an asymptomatic finding on screening mammogram [ 3 , 5 ]. Following the recognition of irregular densities or masses on mammogram, a core needle biopsy will confirm the diagnosis [ 5 ].…”

Following the recognition of irregular densities or masses on mammogram, a core needle biopsy will confirm the diagnosis [ 5 ]. The histology of breast ACC resembles salivary ACC and consists of a biphasic pattern of myoepithelial and epithelial cells arranged in several architectural patterns [ 4 ].…”

“…Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Breast (ACCB) is a rare subtype, representing <0.1% of all breast cancer diagnosed [1]. ACCB usually affects women, in whom it is more frequent in the sixth decade of life [2].…”

“…Histologically presentation shows a double component both luminal epithelial and basal myoepithelial cells, without oestrogen, progesterone and Her-2 receptor expression [3,4]. Despite its belonging to triplenegative class breast tumor, clinical presentation of this disease is usually isolated to breast gland, in 2% of pts patients (pts) there is a nodal involvement and rarely it can metastasize in other parenchyma [1,2,5,6]. This is due to downregulation of genes involved in migration, proliferation and the immune response [7].…”

“…ACC accounts for 0.1–1% of all breast cancers [ 4 , 5 ]. The major issue in the management is, due to its rarity, the absence of clinical trials enrolling these patients to determine the best treatment plan.…”
