Adenoma of parotid gland with sebaceous and oncocytic features

Abstract: A parotid tumor having sebaceous differentiation and a particular histologic picture previously undescribed is reported. The tumor showed features of an adenolymphoma but almost completely lacked a lymphoid component. Sebaceous differentiation was seen in the epithelium of many cysts. Additionally, groups of oxyphilic cells were scattered throughout the tumor. The literature concerning sebaceous differentiation in normal and tumor bearing parotid glands, as well as that concerning tumors with some sebaceous co… Show more

“…At the light microscope level the vacuolated cells fulfilled the minimum criteria for sebaceous differentiation of vacuolated cytoplasm with scalloped nuclei, as defined for skin tumours by Abenosa and Ackerman [1]. Simultaneous occurrence of sebaceous and apocrine differentiation in tumours other than skin tumours is not unique to salivary glands [7]. Similar sebaceous and glandular differentiation was recently described by one of us (M.M.)…”

“…In addition to clear cells with empty cytoplasm, we observed tumour cells with vacuolated cytoplasm resembling sebaceous cells in 3 cases [7]. At the light microscope level the vacuolated cells fulfilled the minimum criteria for sebaceous differentiation of vacuolated cytoplasm with scalloped nuclei, as defined for skin tumours by Abenosa and Ackerman [1].…”

“…No case series of SA cytopathology could be found in our review of the English‐language literature. Nonetheless, a single multi‐institutional case series (nine cases) 4 and a number of single and dual case reports of SLA have been reported 5–29 . We present the FNA biopsy findings from two examples of benign sebaceous neoplasia—one SA and one SLA—and discuss the cytomorphological features and diagnostic challenges associated with each.…”
