Adenylate Kinase Activity and Glutathione Concentration of Cerebrospinal Fluid in Different Neurological Disorders

Abstract: Adenylate kinase activity and glutathione concentration were measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 64 consecutive patients admitted for various neurological disorders. These two analyses were performed in addition to conventional examination of the CSF. Neurological symptoms most probably connected in some cases with no and in others with only subtle changes in the central nervous system were linked to no or only moderate activities of adenylate kinase together with no glutathione. 1 patient with meningioma… Show more

“…As enzymes and other intracellular constituents of cerebral origin may be expected to appear in the cerebro spinal fluid (CSF) after ischemic injury of the brain [37,38], various investigations of CSF have been performed after CPR [35,36,[38][39][40][41][42][43][44], Edgren et al [20] demon strated the prognostic significance of CSF lactate and oth er biochemical parameters such as adenylate kinase activ ity which showed a good correlation between prediction and outcome at 24 h after CPR [20]. “…Sampling and handling of the CSF material, as well as the analytical procedure, have been described elsewhere. 11 Normal values are below 0.015 U/l (the lower limit of detection). As significant amounts of blood may contribute to the total adenylate kinase activity," 2 samples with blood contamination were discarded.…”

“…Adenylate kinase is a predominantly cytoplasmic enzyme normally not found in the CSF, but which appears under conditions known to be associated with even slight changes of plasma membrane function. 11 Glutathione is an intracellular tripeptide found in the CSF in patients with major neurological signs.…”

“…Further, Ronquist et al [12], and Ronquist and Frithz [13] reported that AK was consistently found in the CSF of patients with malignant brain tumors and cerebral infarction. However, Getaz et al [14] claimed that there was no clear correlation between the presence of disease in central nervous system (CNS) and enzyme activity.…”
