Adherence to generic reverse transcriptase inhibitor-based antiretroviral medication at a Tertiary Center in North India

Abstract: At least 95% adherence to medications is required for sustained response to antiretroviral therapy (ART). In resource constraint restrained settings it is not possible to use electronic methods to determine adherence. We determined adherence during the previous 4 weeks by the recall method in 200 patients (138 males) receiving generic triple drug reverse transcriptase inhibitor-based antiretroviral medications. They were administered a uniform questionnaire to determine the number of time they forgot or were u… Show more

“…Our results revealed a high level of adherence (87.6%) among adult PLWHA, similar to that reported in other studies conducted in resource-limited settings in India (≈ 90%) (25) and those conducted in other countries (e.g. Senegal 83%-95% (26) and South Africa 93.5% (27) ).…”

“…However, most studies have found no association (Luszczynska, Sarkar, & Knoll, 2007; Safren et al, 2005; Sharma et al, 2007; Venkatesh et al, 2010; Wanchu, Kaur, Bambery, & Singh, 2007) and the lack of consistency suggests the association may be due to chance, rather than any true relation.…”

“…[15][16][17] We identified a number of socio-demographic, drug-related, healthcare system-related, and psychological variables such as number of HIV-infected children, nature of ART regimen, adverse effects, frequency of taking drugs, number of tablets taken at a time daily, attitude of healthcare persons, quality of treatment, travel cost, distance travelled to reach ART center, and depression (using univariate analysis) which were associated with poor adherence to ART among mothers. In the multivariate model, however, only depression (measured with BDI scale), Trait anxiety level, attitude of healthcare persons, and adverse effects of anti-retroviral drugs predicted poor adherence to treatment.…”
