Adhesive capsulitis after COVID-19 vaccine injection: a peculiar case treated with combined bursa distention and glenohumeral capsular hydrodilatation

Abstract: Frozen shoulder is a common and self-limiting condition affecting the soft tissues of the shoulders, characterized by severe pain, impaired range of motion (ROM) and limitation of daily activities. Its prevalence is 5% and it occurs most commonly in the fifth and sixth decades of life; women are more affected [DePalma in Clin Orthop Relat Res 466:552–560, 2008]. It can be idiopathic or associated with other conditions such as metabolic disorders, diabetes, thyroid diseases, prolonged immobilization, trauma [De… Show more

“…Subacromial bursitis following the COVID-19 vaccine has been reported in numerous case reports, 4 , 7 , 8 but adhesive capsulitis after the COVID-19 vaccine has been reported in one case report without a follow-up or description of the symptoms. 3 A recent case series with a 2-month follow-up described 9 patients who developed symptoms of frozen shoulder after the Covishield vaccine. 11 However, an important distinction is that all patients significantly resolved within two months in their series.…”

“…This was illustrated in a case report in the form of a thickened glenohumeral capsule captured on ultrasound. Treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and intensive physiotherapy was shown to be effective, and the patient's range of motion was fully restored in just under four weeks after diagnosis [54].…”

“… 7 Vaccine-related frozen shoulder has only been published in two small series and some case reports in the entire medical literature. 2 , 5 , 10 There is no definitive evidence or pathogenesis explanation of how a vaccine can directly cause frozen shoulder. Thus, it is not a “known cause” and cannot be a direct causative agent for frozen shoulder.…”
