In this study, we report the first finding of the non-indigenous seaweed Caulacanthus okamurae (Rhodophyta) in the Ionian and Adriatic Seas (Mediterranean). Specimens were identified through molecular analyses based on the plastid ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rbcL) marker. The sequences obtained during this study represent the first molecular evidence of the presence of this taxon in the Mediterranean Sea. Stable populations have been detected in some areas of the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Italy) and in the whole lagoon of Venice, forming dense patches of low turf that reach high biomasses. Turf-forming algae are common in the intertidal zones of tropical regions, but are rare in temperate ones. The particular environmental conditions of transitional water systems, such as the Mar Piccolo of Taranto and the Venice Lagoon, together with the water temperature increase observed in the last years could have favored the settlement and spread of this introduced species.

The Mediterranean Sea is currently experiencing a decline in the abundance of several key species, as a consequence of anthropogenic pressures (e.g., increase in human population, habitat modification and loss, pollution, coastal urbanization, overexploitation, introduction of non-indigenous species and climate change). Herbaria and natural history collections are certainly fundamental for taxonomic studies, but they are also an invaluable, if currently underestimated, resource for understanding ecological and evolutionary responses of species to environmental changes. Macroalgae herbarium collections, which are really consistent (ranging from 200,000 to approximately 500,000 specimens) in some European herbaria (e.g., Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris, University of Copenhagen, Natural History Museum in Kensington), can be successfully used as real “witnesses” to biodiversity changes. In this respect, we report some case studies from the Mediterranean Sea which summarize well the potential of macroalgae herbarium specimens to provide useful data on biodiversity changes. Indeed, these data enable the evaluation of the responses of biota, including shifts in species ranges, the detection of the presence of introduced species, and the prediction of changes in species distributions and patterns under future climate scenarios. To increase the use of this invaluable tool of research, their curation, the digitization of collections, and specimen genomics should be even more addressed.

An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that genetic differentiation and cryptic diversity in the sea occur over considerably smaller spatial scales than previously comprehended, considering the wide distribution range of many morphologically defined macroalgal species. However, knowledge of the turf-forming red alga Caulacanthus is incomplete regarding its species diversity, as well as genetic differentiation within the genus. We analyzed Caulacanthus specimens from the NW Pacific, NE Pacific, Central Pacific, SW Pacific, SE Indian, NE Atlantic, and SE Atlantic Ocean using mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI-5P), plastid ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rbcL), and Rubisco spacer (rbcL-S). The objectives of this study were to 1) determine the number of species that exhibit the morphology of C. ustulatus, 2) investigate the present distribution pattern of Caulacanthus species, and 3) estimate the degree of genetic connectivity between the populations of Caulacanthus species from different regions. Our results revealed molecular evidence that the genus Caulacanthus comprises of at least seven species with deep genetic divergence, which is indicative of not only a strong geographical subdivision but also a relatively long temporal discontinuity. Most species exhibited limited geographic distribution, showing considerable genetic divergence in the populations isolated by distance. Our study provides evidence of a greater evolutionary independence of Caulacanthus populations, which have undergone a series of allopatric diversification events.
