Adjustment of K+ Fluxes and Grapevine Defense in the Face of Climate Change

Abstract: Grapevine is one of the most economically important fruit crops due to the high value of its fruit and its importance in winemaking. The current decrease in grape berry quality and production can be seen as the consequence of various abiotic constraints imposed by climate changes. Specifically, produced wines have become too sweet, with a stronger impression of alcohol and fewer aromatic qualities. Potassium is known to play a major role in grapevine growth, as well as grape composition and wine quality. Impor… Show more

“…The information will deepen our understanding of the molecular pathways associated with the O 3 stress response, specifically how it affects stomatal regulation, MAPK activity, and phytohormone signaling. Abiotic stresses disrupt K + translocation and homeostasis; the review by Monder and colleagues [43] discusses the main negative consequences of the current climate on grape quality and thus wine quality. The essential electrical and osmotic functions of K + are presented, which are intimately dependent on transport systems, membrane energetics, and cellular K + homeostasis.…”

“…At first, we focused on potassium ( Britto et al, 2021 ; Chérel and Gaillard, 2019 ; Monder et al., 2021 ) by analyzing the K-homeostat in the plasma membrane and its interaction with the energizing proton pump ( Figure 1 A). The K-homeostat was composed of K + channels, 1H + /1K + symporters, and electroneutral 1H + /1K + antiporters.…”

“…For potassium, its increase in berries is correlated with a decrease in acidity, often a source of low‐quality wines. Potassium flux in the plant is affected by climate changes and leads to an increase in berry potassium concentration (Monder et al, 2021). Nitrogen is involved in the growth, development and synthesis of aromatic secondary metabolites.…”
