Adjuvant Treatment of Melanoma

Abstract: Melanomas represent 4% of all malignant tumors of the skin, yet account for 80% of deaths from skin cancer. While in the early stages patients can be successfully treated with surgical resection, metastatic melanoma prognosis is dismal. Several oncogenes have been identified in melanoma as BRAF, NRAS, c-Kit, and GNA11 GNAQ, each capable of activating MAPK pathway that increases cell proliferation and promotes angiogenesis, although NRAS and c-Kit also activate PI3 kinase pathway, including being more commonly B… Show more

“…DC can also be activated in vivo requiring the use of non-specific adjuvants such as GM-CSF, CpG, stimulating cytokines as IFN-α/β, STING-activating cyclic dinucleotides (9,10), bacteria as BCG or Listeria or bacterial products. In this regard, IFN-α is a common adjuvant therapy applied in melanoma patients after surgery to prevent or delay tumour relapses (11)(12)(13).…”

“…Malignant melanoma is a highly aggressive type of skin cancer that metastasizes to almost any internal organ; moreover, the incidence of melanoma has increased steadily over the past three decades 1 . Although malignant melanoma accounts for only 4% of all cutaneous malignancies, it is responsible for the majority of skin cancer-related deaths 2 . The global cancer statistics indicates that malignant melanoma is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia (Melanoma Institute Australia; http://www.melanoma.org.au) and the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States 1 .…”
