Pregnancy is a major factor that modifies psychosocial aspects of the adolescents. A study with 120 pregnant adolescents aged 12 to 18 years, without regarding gestational age, was carried out at Prenatal Risk Program in the Secretaria Estadual de Saúde, Belém-Pará, from 10/1991 to 04/1992. At the first encounter, it was made an approach of psychosocial and sexual subjects, with the following results: onset of menarche primarily between 12-13 years old (median 12.2 years old); beginning of sexual practice to 14 years old in 50.9% of the adolescents. An amount of 56.6% were pregnant to 16 years old. Most of the adolescents (98.4%) had their first sexual intercourse with their boy friends and by their own wish (72.5%). In one year of loving affair, 67.5% of the adolescents have already gone on sexual activities, being this attitude more often among youngers (79.4%). Adolescents had learned about sexuality mainly from mates (65.1%). Althouth 55.9% of the adolescents were aware of any contraceptive method, just 13.3% of them used it. The majority of the pregnant adolescents (96.7%) were financially supported by their families. Respectively, 30.3% and 32.1% of these girls left the school before or during pregnancy.The risk factors that may contribute to an early and unintended pregnancy among adolescents, specially the younger ones, were pointed out: little information about sex and contraceptive methods, limited practice on their use and a high rate of precocius sexual activities. ResumoA gravidez na adolescência determina com muita freqüência conseqüências psicossociais para as gestantes adolescentes. Foram avaliados alguns aspectos pessoais-sociais e sexuais de 120 gestantes adolescentes, na faixa etária de 12 a 18 anos, atendidas no Serviço de Pré-Natal de Risco da Secretaria de Saúde do Estado, durante a primeira consulta do pré-natal e independentemente da idade gestacional, de 10/1991 a 04/1992, Belém-Pará.Os resultados demonstraram que a menarca ocorreu com maior freqüência entre 12 e 13 anos (mediana 12,2 anos); 50,9% da iniciação sexual se deu com até 14 anos e 56,6% das gestantes avaliadas encontravam-se na faixa etária de até 16 anos. A maioria (98,4%) das adolescentes iniciaram vida sexual com namorados; 72,5% por desejo próprio e 67,5% com até um ano de namoro, sendo esta atitude mais freqüente (79,4%) entre aquelas mais jovens (12-16 anos). A principal fonte de informação sobre sexualidade referida pelas adolescentes foram os colegas (65,1%) e, quanto ao conhecimento e uso da contracepção, 55,9% conheciam algum método, entretanto, apenas 13,3% faziam uso. Nine hundred fifty randomly selected secondary school girls were surveyed. Sexual activity was claimed by 29%, the youngest age was 12 years and age had no influence on the frequency of sexual intercourse. Multiple sexual partners, a high risk behaviour for contracting STD including AIDS was demonstrated in 33.7% and only 20.3% used orthodox methods of contraception. Induced abortion was procured by 23.5% and most were procured from unskilled personnel and by dangerous methods.
