ADOLESCENT TURMOIL: FACT OR FICTION?*

Abstract: Summary The concept of adolescent turmoil is considered in the context of findings from a total population epidemiological study of Isle of Wight 14–15‐yr‐olds. It is concluded that parent child alienation is not a common feature unless the adolescents are already showing psychiatric problems. Inner turmoil, however, as represented by feelings of misery and self‐depreciation is quite frequent. Psychiatric, conditions are only slightly commoner during adolescence than in middle childhood but the pattern of diso… Show more

“…While most teens make successful adjustments to life, research historically indicates that psychological difficulties in youth often develop into psychiatric problems in adulthood (Kriechman, 1985;Rutter, Graham, Chadwick, & Yule, 1976;Swift, 1987). The mentally healthy adolescent is one who has sufficient support and coping skills to deal with anger and stress plus negotiate family, social, and school problems (Compas & Orosan, 1993).…”

“…The various problems evident in rural areas may be compounded by the lack of specialty health services, resulting in rural health disparities (Anderson & Gittler, 2005; USDHHS, 2000). Attempting to apply urban designed health promotion interventions in rural settings has been met with limited success (Stanton et al, 2006).While most teens make successful adjustments to life, research historically indicates that psychological difficulties in youth often develop into psychiatric problems in adulthood (Kriechman, 1985;Rutter, Graham, Chadwick, & Yule, 1976;Swift, 1987). “…Improved function and quality of life have been attributed to limb salvage but have not been universally demonstrated in the adult population [33]. A number of studies document better physical function in patients with limb salvage compared to patients with amputation [1,10,15,22,24,32,38,39].…”

“…Considerable evidence supports the notion that a high level of discord is a marker of adolescent adjustment difficulties. In the classic Isle of Wight study, for instance, adolescents with psychiatric disorders were twice as likely to report altercations with parents as were those without psychiatric disorders (Rutter, Graham, Chadwick, & Yule, 1976). Community samples of adolescents also report associations between indices of maladjustment and the frequency of conflict, primarily with parents (for a review, see Smetana, 1996).…”
