Psychological problems are prevalent among adolescents, and previous studies have robustly demonstrated that individual and family factors play a role in the formation and maintenance of these problems. On the other hand, not all adolescents show the same characteristics in terms of these factors and can be categorized into different groups. Identifying this heterogeneity is also important in intervention for psychological problems. Thus, this study aimed to identify patterns of parental attitudes, basic psychological needs, self‐regulation, and alexithymia, using latent class analysis (LCA), and investigated how different patterns of these individual and family factors are associated with psychological problems. Participants included a sample of 331 volunteer Turkish adolescents (140 male [42.3%], 191 female [57.7%]). LCA indicated a two‐class solution fit the current data well and 65% of the participants were classified into the first latent class which was labeled as “positive individual and family context” (PIFC). The PIFC were found to have higher levels of parental sensitivity and autonomy support, need satisfaction and self‐regulation, but lower levels of mother's psychological and behavioral control and father's behavioral control, need frustration, and alexithymia. The second latent class, labeled as “negative individual and family context” (NIFC), included 35% of the adolescents. Adolescents in NIFC had low levels of parental sensitivity, autonomy support, satisfaction of basic psychological needs, and self‐regulation, but high levels of mother's psychological and behavioral control, father's behavioral control, frustration of basic psychological needs, and alexithymia. Moreover, after controlling gender and age, adolescents classified in the NIFC displayed significantly higher levels of psychological problems than those classified in the PIFC. These findings support the idea that individual and familial factors interact to affect adolescents' mental health and suggest that clinicians and helping professionals would benefit from including these factors in intervention processes.

Background The purpose of this study is to examine alexithymic tendencies in Japanese adolescents (aged 12–20) and their effects on somatic complaints. Methods Participants were Japanese adolescents (n = 2,759). Alexithymic tendencies were assessed by the Alexithymia Scale for Adolescents (ASA), and somatic complaints by the Somatic Complaint List (SCL). Results The following results were obtained. 1) ASA total scores remained at a high level from early to late adolescence. 2) Among the ASA subfactors, difficulty identifying feelings (DIF) and difficulty describing feelings (DDF), increased during adolescence, whereas externally oriented thinking (EOT) decreased; as a result, the ASA total scores remained high. 3) DIF significantly affected somatic complaints among adolescents irrespective of their academic year and gender. 4) DDF only had an effect of increasing somatic complaints in junior high and high school-aged male participants, and this effect disappeared as respondents’ age grew and they were university students. This shows that the effect of alexithymic tendencies on somatic complaints changed with age. Conclusion Compared to the results of previous studies, the results of this study showed that alexithymic tendencies among Japanese adolescents are consistently high. The study further revealed that the increasing somatic complaints were consistently influenced by DIF.

Background The developmental trauma theory suggests that traumatic events impede the ability of individuals to form interpersonal relationships, impair cognition, affect, and increase the vulnerability of adolescents to develop psychopathology. However, few studies have examined the applicability of this theory among African American adolescents who were exposed to community violence and adverse outcomes, including bullying victimization and somatic symptoms. Aims Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to first test the association between exposure to community violence and somatic symptoms. Then, we explored whether bullying victimization mediated the relationship between exposure to community violence and somatic symptoms while controlling for gender differences and substance use (n = 622). Results Results suggest that exposure to community violence is positively associated with somatic symptoms. Moreover, the association between exposure to community violence and somatic symptoms was mediated by bullying victimization. Discussion and Conclusion These results were consistent with the developmental trauma theory, such that trauma could increase the vulnerability for future victimization, thus, leading to somatic symptoms. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
