Adopting open innovation in supply networks

Abstract: Knowledge distribution compels firms to search outside for new knowledge to sustain their competitive advantage. The purpose of this paper concerns the role of network structures and inter-organisational relations on ‘purposive knowledge inflow.’ It also aims to suggest network conditions for enhancing knowledge flow in different types of open innovation practices with suppliers. Based on the past research, four types of open innovation approaches, through which focal firms can gain access to their suppliers’ … Show more

“…Involving suppliers in innovation is a well-studied topic in the current literature, especially on supply chain management (see Johnsen, (2009) and Kazemargi et al (2016)). To benefit from suppliers in innovation projects, firms need to understand and accept that the supplier is a member of the innovation project and that the knowledge provided by the supplier is consistent with the objectives of the project (Ragatz et al, 2002;Santamaria & Surroca, 2011).…”

This occurs because the first-tier supplier may not be willing to share its knowledge and technology with focal firms, diluting its competitive advantage (Grant, 1996) embedded in the supplier's network (Kazemargi et al. , 2016).…”
