Adoption of Modern Hydrogen Technologies in Rail Transport

Abstract: Many new zero-emission propulsion technologies are being developed today due to the need to reduce the atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions. The impact of the transport sector on the environment drives a need for innovation, including innovation in the rail transport sector specifically. At the TRAKO fair of rail vehicles the newest technological solutions have been presented. These new vehicles are expected to take over the rail transport sector in the coming decades. Many of the presented solutions and proto… Show more

“…Chen and Melaina (2019) and Jones, Genovese, and Tob-Ogu (2020) argued that more attention should be paid to cost policies. Similarly, Gallas and Stobnicki (2022) argued that the main limitation of hydrogen energy applications is the relative cost of hydrogen fuel and that hydrogen production technologies need to be developed to reduce the cost of hydrogen production or that hydrogen production needs to be subsidized. After this, Rottoli et al (2021) studied alternative pathways for the electrification of light vehicles in the European transport sector.…”

“…Hydrogen can also be used in fuel cells, the so-called Fuel Cell Hydrogen (FCH) [5,24]. In this case, the products of the chemical reaction are just water vapor, heat and electricity, which is then used to drive electric motors [9]. Ultimately, hydrogen is considered the future application for these types of solutions.…”
