Adoption Pathways for DC Power Distribution in Buildings

Abstract: Driven by the proliferation of DC energy sources and DC end-use devices (e.g., photovoltaics, battery storage, solid-state lighting, and consumer electronics), DC power distribution in buildings has recently emerged as a path to improved efficiency, resilience, and cost savings in the transitioning building sector. Despite these important benefits, there are several technological and market barriers impeding the development of DC distribution, which have kept this technology at the demonstration phase. This pa… Show more

“…Another aspect is regarding the LV grid configuration, which in this case can also be an asset. Another application area in which DC microgrids can play an important role in the future is residential areas and buildings [74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82]. DC microgrids can especially be used in residential individual houses, as nowadays, many of them already have photovoltaic generators.…”

Some of the prosumers sell the energy, but typically the price is not the Another application area in which DC microgrids can play an important role in the future is residential areas and buildings [74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82]. “…Currently, a lack of standards and associated equipment impede the wider deployment of residential dc microgrids [9], while some countries, like the Netherlands, showed strong efforts in standardization [10]. New types of power electronic converters need to be developed to facilitate the deployment of residential dc microgrids.…”
