Adoptive transfer of immunity against Vibrio anguillarum in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, vaccinated by the immersion method

Abstract: Rainbow trout, immunized by the immersion method against Vihrio unguillurum. were used as donors of plasma and celis for transfer to unimmunized trout. Recipients were then challenged with a 20 min exposure to a virulent Vibrio unguillurum suspension, and the mortality was compared to that of trout receiving plasma and cells from unimmunized donors. Immunity was successfully conferred by plasma taken from immune donors 16 days post-immunization (PI), and by pronephros and spleen cells from Day 20 and 21 PI don… Show more

“…Attempts, using the passive transfer approach, to determine whether humoral immunity occurs in salmonids following IMM vaccination have yielded contradictory results. Viele et al (1980) were successful in transferring immunity to naive rainbow trout with plasma from rainbow trout IMM-vaccinated with Va. On the other hand, found the opposite using ayu Plecoglossus a1 ti velis.…”

“…These results suggest the formation of systemic memory in both species after oral vaccination with a bioencapsulated bacterin. In the case of vaccination against V. anguillarum, the humoral response is strongly related to final protection against vibriosis (Viele et al, 1980;Harrel et al, 1975;Dec et al, 1990). In addition, a mucosal immune response resulting in specific antibodies at mucosal surfaces may also be induced after oral vaccination (Rombout et al, 1989c) and could contribute to a higher level of protection.…”

“…Antibodies play an important role in the protection of rainbow trout during cryptobiosis (Wehnert and Woo, 1981;Jones and Woo, 1987;Thomas and Woo, 1990) as well as during some bacterial and viral infections (Harrell et al, 1975;Viele et al, 1980). Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Sitja-Bobadilla and Woo, 1994), detectable antibodies were found in the blood of rainbow trout two weeks after C. salmositica infection.…”
