Adsorption and Reaction of SO2 on Graphene-Supported Pt Nanoclusters

Abstract: Atomic sulfur and its oxides are common catalyst poisons and intriguing research subjects. Recently, graphene-supported nanoclusters were introduced as suitable model catalysts. We investigated the adsorption and reaction of SO 2 on graphene-supported Pt nanocluster arrays with high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. SO 2 adsorbs in two geometries-perpendicular and parallel to the surface-on both cluster facets and steps. Further insight is gained from the comparison of our results to previous data o… Show more

“…Figure 11(a) shows that the prepared samples contain peaks of Zn, Fe, O, C, and N. Figure 11(b) shows that the binding energies at To analyze these spectra in more detail and to apply literature data for comparison, we deconvoluted the S2p lines into two components. e comparison with literature data allows unambiguous assignment of these S2p 3/2 features to sul te (165.8-167.5) and sulfate (168.9-171.1) species [2]. Figure 11(d) shows that the binding energies of the peak of sulfur were 166.7 eV and 168.9 eV, which are in good agreement with SO 3 2− and SO 4 2− states, respectively.…”

“…erefore, the ZnFe 2 O 4 /AC composite surface contains a certain amount of both sul te and sulfate species after the adsorption of SO 2 , which further indicates that the chemical adsorption took place [23]. 2 . Figure 12 shows the SO 2 adsorption abilities of AC, ZnFe 2 O 4 particles, and the ZnFe 2 O 4 /AC sample at the self-made desulfurization equipment.…”

“…19 Adsorption of O 2 , H 2 , and CO on Pt cluster arrays was conducted and provides evidence for CO oxidation at room temperature. 20 The reaction of Pt clusters on Gr/ Rh(111) with CO, 21 S, 22,23 and SO 2 24 as well as the system Pt/ h-BN/Rh(111) 25 and its reaction with ethene 26,27 were investigated recently. However, one factor impeding the widespread use of such cluster arrays is their thermal decay through ripening already starting at 450 K. 17,25 Ir cluster superlattices on h-BN/Ir(111) display excellent order and have been demonstrated to be thermally stable up to 700 K, 28 that is, to much higher temperatures than what has been reported until now for other systems.…”

“…As pointed out by Billinge, surface-sensitive X-ray diffraction of such cluster superlattices in operando would allow to follow the change of structure and shape of clusters as a function of reaction conditions. Examples of versatile templates for cluster superlattices are thin Al 2 O 3 layers prepared on Ni 3 Al(111), ,, graphene (Gr) on Ir(111) ,, or Rh(111), and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on Ir(111) or Rh(111). …”
