Hybrid ion exchangers (HIXs) containing fine Cu2O and Cu0 particles were subjected to thermal analysis in order to determine their hygroscopic water content (with regard to their anomalously low porosity) and to determine the effect of the oxidation state of the copper atom in the deposit on the thermal properties of composite materials. Commercially available anion exchangers, Amberlite IRA 900Cl (macroreticular, M) and Amberlite IRA 402OH (gel-like, G), were used as supporting materials. M/Cu2O, G/Cu2O, M/Cu and G/Cu, containing 4.3–8.4 wt% Cu, were subjected to thermal analysis under respectively air and N2. TG/DTG curves revealed that dry M/Cu and G/Cu contained as little as 7.2% and 4.3% hygroscopic water, while M/Cu2O and G/Cu2O contained respectively 10.6% and 9.4% (Cu0 was a stronger water repellent than Cu2O). The oxidation state of the copper atom in the deposit was found to affect the amount of the forming char, and also Cu0 was found to contribute to the formation of more char than in the pyrolysis of the pure resin (the anion exchanger with no copper deposit). Under air the two kinds of particles transformed into CuO, while under N2 metallic copper and char (from the resin phase) made up the solid residue. This means that in the pyrolysis of the HIXs the inorganic phase participated in char formation and it also transformed itself (undergoing reduction when possible). The above findings provide a basis for in-depth research aimed at the innovative use of copper-containing HIXs and at obtaining usable composite materials with a designed (organic-inorganic) composition.

The unburned hydrocarbon (HC) emissions of automobiles are subject to strong regulations because they are known to be converted into fine dust, ozone, and photochemical smog. Pitch-based activated carbon fibers (ACF) prepared by steam activation can be a good solution for HC removal. The structural characteristics of ACF were observed using X-ray diffraction. The pore characteristics were investigated using N2/77K adsorption isotherms. The butane working capacity (BWC) was determined according to ASTM D5228. From the results, the specific surface area and total pore volume of the ACF were determined to be 840–2630 m2/g and 0.33–1.34 cm3/g, respectively. The butane activity and butane retentivity of the ACF increased with increasing activation time and were observed to range between 15.78–57.33% and 4.19–11.47%, respectively. This indicates that n-butane adsorption capacity could be a function not only of the specific surface area or total pore volume but also of the sub-mesopore volume fraction in the range of 2.0–2.5 nm of adsorbents. The ACF exhibit enhanced BWC, and especially adsorption velocity, compared to commercial products (granules and pellets), with lower concentrations of n-butane due to a uniformly well-developed pore structure open directly to the outer surface.

Pharmaceutical industries generate very large quantities of toxic organic compounds which include volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and/or organic volatile impurities (OVIs). These toxic compounds, amongst which are emerging residual solvents, largely come from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and are being continuously dumped into the environment at an alarming rate. Efficient treatment of pharmaceutical wastewaters (effluents) is currently a major challenge because of not only the enormous quantity to be disposed of but also its complexity, as well as its hazardous nature. Dumping these kinds of polluted wastes into the environment at uncontrolled rates are putting increasing pressure on freshwater ecosystems. This review paper focuses on combined electrochemical degradation and biopolymer adsorption treatment processes and techniques for toxic compounds in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. These emerging processes such as the combination of electrochemical techniques as a primary treatment method, followed by an adsorption process, is now a topic of intense research as it is proving to very feasible, ecofriendly, and cost-effective in the complete recovery of toxic residual solvents from binary aquatic systems. This paper presents major toxic pollutants in pharmaceutical wastewaters and their fate in the aquatic environment, their sources, and origin in pharmaceutical industries. The evaluation of the traditional methods used for the removal of these emerging organic pollutants from aquatic matrices and pharmaceutical effluents is accomplished. New developments in electrochemical treatments for the remediation of toxic compounds in pharmaceutical wastewaters are also discussed.
