In this study, hexadecylamine (HDA) impregnated chitosan-powder activated carbon (Ct-PAC) composite beads were successfully prepared and applied to adsorption of the anionic dye reactive black 5 (RB5) in aqueous solution. The Ct-PAC-HDA beads synthesized with 0.2 g powdered activated carbon (PAC) and 0.04 g HDA showed the highest dye removal efficiency. The prepared beads were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Various adsorption parameters, i.e., adsorbent dosage, pH, and contact time, which affect the adsorption performance, were studied in a series of batch experiments. The obtained adsorption data were found to be better represented by Freundlich (R2 = 0.994) and pseudo-second-order (R2 = 0.994) models. Moreover, it was ascertained that the adsorption of RB5 onto Ct-PAC-HDA beads is pH-dependent, and the maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity (666.97 mg/g) was observed at pH 4. It was also proved that Ct-PAC-HDA beads were regenerable for repeated use in the adsorption process.

Groundwater treatment waste (GWTW), as an environmentally friendly renewable nanomaterial, was implemented for the removal of anodized aluminum dye Sanodure Green (SG) from aqueous solutions. The capability of the SG metal complex dye removal was assessed by measuring solution decoloration and chromium elimination degree. GWTW was characterized using FTIR, SEM, EDX, TEM, XPS and surface area measurements. Kinetic curves were obtained by changing initial dye concentration, pH, temperature and adsorbent dose. Kinetic studies showed that up to 90 % of SG dye was removed within a contact time of 20 min. The adsorption of the dye was favourable at 293 K temperature in the acidic pH region (pH 1.5–2.0) with maximum adsorption capacity 185 mg g −1 . Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model as well as hyperbolic tangent, diffusion-chemisorption and Elovich kinetic models accurately describe the dye removal process. The calculated thermodynamic parameters confirmed that SG dye removal occurred spontaneously and exothermically. The magnitude of enthalpy change (ΔH ° = −35.80 kJ mol −1 ) was in agreement with the electrostatic interaction. The adsorption potential of GWTW for SG dye removal was also evaluated using a real wastewater produced after dyeing of anodized aluminum.

Bisphenol S, an alternative chemical to bisphenol A, has a negative effect on living organisms and has frequently been detected in drinking water systems. A promising and cost-effective method for removing bisphenol S from tap water is adsorption by activated carbon. However, activated carbon significantly decreased the adsorption capacity of bisphenol S in tap water comparing with that in deionized water based on the experimental results. Dissolved organic matter in tap water was likely responsible for it. The adsorption kinetics can be described by a pseudo-second-order model. The Langmuir isotherm model can well describe the process, suggesting monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was calculated as 83.19 mg g −1 . Higher temperature and pH were unfavorable to the process. Changes in entropy, enthalpy, and Gibbs free energy were calculated and implied a spontaneous and exothermic adsorption process. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis found that hydroxyl and amino functional groups are the main groups involved. The research provides a substantial basis for understanding bisphenol S removal from drinking water by adsorption using activated carbon to limit direct exposure to bisphenol S in drinking water.
