Adsorption-desorption and leaching behavior of diuron on selected Kenyan agricultural soils

Abstract: In this work, the adsorption-desorption dynamics of diuron in three typical Kenyan agricultural soils, Nzoia (NZ), Thika (TH) and Machakos (MK) was investigated. The equilibrium adsorption data, tested against three classical nonlinear adsorption isotherms, was best described by the Freundlich model. The Freundlich adsorption constant, (K F), increased in the order MK > TH > NZ soil. Additionally, the negative Gibb's free energy values indicate the adsorption processes were thermodynamically spontaneous and ph… Show more

“…The adsorption process was characterized by employing the Langmuir equation [ 49 ]: Q e = kQ max C e (1+kC e ) and the Freundlich equation [ 50 , 51 ]: Q e = aC e 1/n , where Q e (mg kg −1 ) represents the equilibrium P adsorption capacity of soil at a given P concentration C e (mg L −1 ), Q max (mg kg −1 ) denotes the maximum P adsorption capacity of soil, and k (L mg −1 ) signifies the binding strength constant for P at the adsorption site. Furthermore, k·Q max is defined as the maximum buffer capacity for phosphorus adsorption (MBC, L kg −1 ).…”

“…In Brazil, diuron is recommended for coffee, sugar cane, cotton, and citrus crops and controls both dicotyledons and monocotyledons in pre-and post-emergence of weeds [5][6][7][8]. Diuron has a non-ionic and neutral octanol-water partition coefficient (K ow = 2.87) and sorption coefficient normalized by soil organic carbon (OC) content (K oc = 680 L kg −1 ) [9].…”

“…According to the European Food Safety Authority, acceptable daily intake (ADI) of DCMU is 0.007 mg/kg bw/day, whereas acute reference dose (ARfD) is 0.016 mg/kg bw/day. Occupational exposure is one of the main concerns about this herbicide, mainly through pollution of both soil and water (8)(9)(10)(11)(12). However, this herbicide is also responsible for a high number of acute intoxications, voluntary or not, which lead to long-term consequences for poisoned persons (13,14).…”
