Layered or fibrous clay minerals are used as adsorbents because they have good performance to remove inorganic and organic species. In this work, a Brazilian fibrous clay mineral was applied to remove Remazol Yellow GR industrial dye from simple and binary systems; this was performed in the presence of lead in the latter case. The adsorption efficiency was investigated under various conditions of pH, time, temperature and dye concentration. The experimental data were fitted to the kinetic pseudo-first-and pseudo-second-order models, and the isotherms were fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The maximum adsorption capacity was 20.08 mg g -1 at pH 2, 240 minutes and 298 K, and these data were better fit by the kinetic pseudo-second-order model. The equilibrium study was fitted to the Langmuir model at 298 K and Freundlich for other temperatures and binary systems. The dye sorption in the presence of lead was decreased to 15 mg g -1 . Therefore, palygorskite behaved as a promising solid for treating effluents.

The main purpose of this research was to assess sludge binding properties as a bioadsorbent towards cationic dyes. Digested sludge was used to adsorb a cationic dye (methylene blue) from aqueous solution. A complete spectroscopic analysis (FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR) was carried out on sludge before and after the adsorption of methylene blue and after two months of storage. Results showed the presence of important binding sites to cationic dyes. FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR analysis reflected the presence of carboxyl and amino groups, which play an important role in the adsorption of methylene blue due to chemical interactions. In addition, these techniques showed the accumulation of methylene blue after storage of samples for a two month period. The sludge matrix was modified by biological activity resulting in the preferential degradation of carbohydrate‐type materials. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 35: 1330–1337, 2016

Hydrogel microparticles have been prepared through cocrosslinking of cyclodextrin and of anionic carboxymethyl or sulfopropyl pullulan with a new bifunctional reagent: 3-(glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane. This reagent forms crosslinking both through grafting with the epoxy end on the OH polysaccharide and through hydrolysis and condensation of the methoxy silane groups from the other end. Samples of cyclodextrin/anionic polysaccharides with various amounts of crosslinking agent were prepared. Characterization of the hydrogel microparticles considered the water swelling behavior, porosity measurements, retention of biologically active substances, which can occur by their inclusion in cyclodextrin inner cavities and in the pores of hydrogels, as well as through the electrostatic forces toward anionic polyelectrolyte charges. Their improved retention of various organic molecules as water pollutants, drugs, enzymes, recommend them as chromatographic supports, supports for the separation/immobilization of enzymes or for controlled release systems.
