Adsorption of ethanol onto parent and surface treated activated carbon powders

Abstract: In this paper, adsorption isotherms and kinetics of ethanol onto highly porous activated carbon powders have been investigated. Adsorbents used in the present study are (i) parent Maxsorb III, (ii) KOH-H2 treated Maxsorb III, and (iii) H2 treated Maxsorb III. Adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the assorted pairs have been measured using magnetic suspension adsorption measurement unit (MSB-VG-S2). Experiments have been conducted across assorted adsorption temperatures that are useful for the operation of adso… Show more

“…This indicates exceptional ethanol tolerance of investigated B-OMC-1 catalyst. Small reduction of ORR current (around 2 %) might be ascribed to ethanol adsorption on carbon surface [72,73]. As suggested previously [35,36], the presence of a large number of defects could enhance EtOH adsorption on the surface of the catalyst, but this effect is rather small.…”

“…The adsorbent for water is silica gel (type A), while adsorbents for other refrigerants are activated carbons. The isotherm equations of these refrigerantadsorbent pairs were taken from literatures [6,2,3,1,5]. The calculation of the COP and SCE was based on an adsorption cooling cycle with refrigerant evaporation temperature of 10 • C, adsorption temperature of 30 C, condensation temperature of 30 • C and desorption temperature of 50 C to 100 C. It was assumed that the heat capacity ratio, M hex c hex /(M ac c ac ) equaled to 2, which is a reasonable value for a fin and tube type adsorption heat exchanger.…”

“…Ammonia and alcohols are major refrigerants studied in adsorption heat pump applications with activated carbons as the adsorbent [1,2,3]. The application of adsorption heat pump can be expanded to refrigeration with these refrigerants whereas water refrigerant cannot be used for cooling under freezing temperature.…”
