Adsorption of fluoride at the interface of water with calcined magnesium–ferri–lanthanum hydrotalcite-like compound

Abstract: A new calcined Mg/Fe/La hydrotalcite-like compound was prepared and showed a good performance for fluoride adsorption. The “memory effect” of the adsorbent and lanthanum played a great role for fluoride adsorption.

“…38 Anion exchange behaviour refers to any ions with negatively charged ions that can be exchanged stoichiometrically with similarly charged ions in the aqueous phase of a chemical process. 39 The unique anion-exchange mechanism of MOF-801 can be attributed to the isoelectronic and comparable ionic radii between hydroxyl and uoride ion, and by the electrostatic interaction between zirconium cation and uoride ion as shown in eqn (8) below.…”

“…There are two common types of multi-metal oxide adsorbents. One is prepared by compounding each metal element in a certain ratio ( Wu K. et al, 2017 ) such as layered double/triple hydroxides ( Wu P. et al, 2017 ), and the other is to modify one metal oxide with others; the ones mostly reported are modified alumina ( He et al, 2019 ) or magnetic iron oxides.…”

“…The addition of rare earth metals has been reported to further enhance the affinity with fluoride. Wu P. et al (2017 ) introduced La into Mg/Fe LDH to form Mg/Fe/La hydrotalcite-like compounds with layered porous structure, which significantly enhanced the fluoride adsorption capacity of Mg/Fe LDH.…”

“…A small amount of fluorine is absorbed to enhance bone hardness, but excessive intake can cause bone fluorosis, which can even be life-threatening in severe cases. 4 Iron is an essential trace element for the human body. Iron ions participate in the transport of oxygen required by the human body.…”
