Adsorption of lead ions from wastewater using nano silica spheres synthesized on calcium carbonate templates

Abstract: Lead is a heavy metal that is bio accumulative and non-biodegradable that poses a threat to our health when it exists in excess in our bloodstream. It has found its way into wastewater from mostly chemical industrial processes. In this article, we investigated the adsorption and hence removal of lead (II) ions from wastewater in order to purify it for re-use in industrial processes or for plant and animal use. We synthesized nano silica hollow spheres (NSHS) and used them as adsorbents to remove lead ions from… Show more

“…The extracted fibers and drawn fibers were chopped into length of less than 0.5 mm to fully eliminate the effect of crystal orientation, the WAXD spectra of the fibers were determined at 40 kV and 150 mA. According to Equation ( 3) and ( 4), the average grain size (G) [36][37][38][39] and crystallinity (X c,WAXD ) of the fibers can be acquired using peak fitting of software Jade 6.5.…”

“…The extracted fibers and drawn fibers were chopped into length of less than 0.5 mm to fully eliminate the effect of crystal orientation, the WAXD spectra of the fibers were determined at 40 kV and 150 mA. According to Equation () and (), the average grain size (G) 36–39 and crystallinity ( X c ,WAXD ) of the fibers can be acquired using peak fitting of software Jade 6.5. normalG=Bcosθ, Xc,WAXD=ScSc+Sa, where, B is the width at half height of diffraction peak and K is Scherrer constant with value of 0.8. λ is the wavelength of X‐ray which is 0.154 nm. θ refers to the Bragg angle of diffraction peak.…”

“…The designed wafer was capable of adsorbing the Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ and Cr 3+ with the highest adsorption of Cd 2+ 28%, followed by 22% and 18% of Pb 2+ and Cr 3+ metal ions [ 102 ].Milton et al 2020 designed the nano-silica hollow spheres (NSHS) having a crystal size of 39.5 nm. The designed nano-silica hollow spheres were able to adsorb 99.60% of Pb 2+ metal ions at pH 5 [ 103 ]. Sofiya et al 2017 designed amine and aromatic functionalized bilayer spherical silica nanoparticles and successfully applied them for the removal of Cu 2+ and methylene blue dye.…”
