Few studies tried to explore the mitigation effect and underlying mechanisms of biochar and their complex for negative allelopathy from invasive plants, which may provide a new way in the invasive plant management. Herein, an invasive plant (Solidago canadensis)‐derived biochar (IBC) and its composite with hydroxyapatite (HAP/IBC) were synthesized by high temperature pyrolysis, and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion spectrometer, X‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Then, both the batch adsorption and pot experiments were conducted to compare the removal effects of kaempferol‐3‐O‐β‐D‐glucoside (C21H20O11, kaempf), an allelochemical from S. canadensis, on IBC and HAP/IBC, respectively. HAP/IBC showed a stronger affinity for kaempf than IBC due to its higher specific surface area, more functional groups (P‐O, P‐O‐P, PO43−), stronger crystallization [Ca3(PO4)2]. The maximum kaempf adsorption capacity on HAP/IBC was six times higher than on IBC (10.482 mg/g > 1.709 mg/g) via π–π interactions, functional groups, and metal complexation. The kaempf adsorption process could be fitted best by both pseudo‐second‐order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Furthermore, HAP/IBC addition into soils could enhance and even recover the germination rate and/or seedling growth of tomato inhibited by negative allelopathy from the invasive S. canadensis. These results indicate that the composite of HAP/IBC could more effectively mitigate the allelopathy from S. canadensis than IBC, which may be a potential efficient approach to control the invasive plant and improve invaded soils.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a widely used brominated flame retardant in electronics manufacturing, has caused global contamination due to improper e-waste disposal. Its persistence, bioaccumulation, and potential carcinogenicity drive studies of its transformation and underlying (a)biotic interactions. This study achieved an anaerobic enrichment culture capable of reductively dehalogenating TBBPA to the more bioavailable bisphenol A. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and quantitative PCR confirmed that successive dehalogenation of four bromide ions from TBBPA was coupled with the growth of both Dehalobacter sp. and Dehalococcoides sp. with growth yields of 5.0 ± 0.4 × 10 8 and 8.6 ± 4.6 × 10 8 cells per μmol Br − released (N = 3), respectively. TBBPA dehalogenation was facilitated by solid humin and reduced humin, which possessed the highest organic radical signal intensity and reducing groups −NH 2 , and maintained the highest dehalogenation rate and dehalogenator copies. Genome-centric metatranscriptomic analyses revealed upregulated putative TBBPA-dehalogenating rdhA (reductive dehalogenase) genes with humin amendment, cprA-like Dhb_rdhA1 gene in Dehalobacter species, and Dhc_rdhA1/Dhc_rdhA2 genes in Dehalococcoides species. The upregulated genes of lactate fermentation, de novo corrinoid biosynthesis, and extracellular electron transport in the humin amended treatment also stimulated TBBPA dehalogenation. This study provided a comprehensive understanding of humin-facilitated organohalide respiration.

Porous TiO2/activated carbon (AC) material was synthesized by grafting peroxo-hydro titanium complexes to rice husk-derived activated carbon. It was found that the morphology of TiO2/AC consists of TiO2 fine particles highly dispersed on the AC matrix. The obtained TiO2/AC composites with high surface area and a red shift exhibit an excellent adsorption performance in both single and trinary system toward methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and methyl red (MR). The isotherm models including extended Langmuir, P-factor, ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) for Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips models were applied to study the adsorption equilibrium data of trinary solutions. It was found that IAST for Freundlich and Langmuir models were the most suitable one to describe the adsorption of the three dyes on TiO2/AC material. The high maximum adsorption capacities (mmol g-1) in single/trinary mixture were found as 0.452/0.340 for MB; 0.329/0.321 for MO; and 0.806/2.04 for MR. Moreover, the recyclability experiments showed that the adsorbent could be reused through photocatalytic self-cleaning for at least three cycles with stable capacity. Thus, the TiO2/AC can be effectively employed for the removal of dyes from industrial textile wastewater.
